I have a 3lb loritone rotary tumbler. I read somewhere that 1000 grit doesn't wear out and you can re use it over and over.
Is that also true for 500 grit?

Melvis,
Polish can be reused but 1000 grit does break down. In my vibe it breaks down aproximately in 1/2 every 24 hours, guessing two weeks in the rotary??? So in my vibe, after 24 hours 500 becomes 1000, after 48 hours the same grit if left running becomes 2000 etc.... Polish is usually 14000 and is so fine it really doesn't break down anymore.
I ran a test awhile back with 500 grit and obsidian. After 3 days in the vibe the obsidian was already looking glossy. After rinsing and moving them to 1000 I noticed in 24 hours that they were hazy again and I had to run them for two days to get them back to the gloss that 3 days in 500 had already achieved.
Hope this helps a little?

I reuse 500 grit as a "seed" or thickener- kinda jump starting the slurry so as to cushion the rocks. I run 4 to 5 batches thru before dumping it and starting with fresh-
