Going crazy with the last couple weeks of school with my kids but.... had to find time to post this one! My parents came down for a visit from Lummi Island in the San Juans, Puget Sound. They had the tractors out digging holes for the septic for their cabin and this popped up. My mom brought it to me and was ecstatic that she found petrified wood for me! I don't know a thing about petrified wood in natural form... missed the pet wood field trip that Woodyrock hosted Anyway, thought it looked like wood but when I tried a quickie window on it, it looked like something different. Can someone help me ID this??? 8 lbs. Wet: Dry: End before window: After quickie window (white specs are pits...): Very black with grayish banding that has a lot of pitting. THANK YOU to whoever will help me figure out what my mother's "FIND" is! ~Krystee

Krystee:
Still looks like wood to me, and typical of local petwood.....nice, and black inside, and not overly hard.. Have a good look at the cut with with some magnification, and look for cell structure. You could also cut a slab off the end, dump it into a container of household bleach for a week or so to lighten it up. It could be a lump of shale, even though it does look like wood. Woody

Woody knows that area better than me but I've seen a lot of Central California sedimentary rocks that look a lot like wood on the outside. Best way to tell is follow the layers across the ends. If they are sedimentary layers they will look like layers or banding. If wood the ends will show wood growth rings or other detailing. If there are limb casts up there they will have wood exterior detailing but random insides.
