So I am looking for a place to buy some tumbling grit. Also my belt broke on my Thumblers -T, and need a new one, and a spare. I have looked at The Rock Shed, And they have a pack of 1lb of each stage for like $15. But the only problem is the shipping cost near matches that. The site says If it fits in a FRB, ect, ect. Will the grit pack and belts fit in one? the rock shed site is stone age too! It's so hard to get around on there. and it feels a bit like a scam for money or something. Is there anywhere elts I should look? :help: ~Colt

Try Kingsley North. They have grit and belts.

Personally I love buying my grit at The Rock Shed. He is great to work with, ships very quickly and generally in a flat rate box and he gives you candy with the order. And yes the belts will fit in the same box.

You can trust the Rock Shed. Don't paypal your payment until he goes over the order because he can tell you if it fits in the flat rate box and give you a better shipping price, he did for me, and it wasn't stone age time, he got back with me fast. I was happy. Don't write him off because you think the website is old school.
Nothing wrong with Kingsley North either.
WHerever you buy, I might consider buying more coarse grit instead of equal amounts of grit for each stage.

Shawn at the Rockshed can usually get about 20# of grit etc in a flat rate box so I usually order the max I can get in one box for one shipping fee. I now buy coarse grit in 50 pound packs from Kingsley-North as they have a good deal on shipping and it works out to a bout $2 per pound delivered. Of course, I go through a lot of 60/90 grit......Mel

Thanks! These guys seem like the way to go. Tanya, Thank you too for your input! Do you mean like real, candy, that you eat? lol! Peachfront, I'm not trying to boy'cot TRS, or anything. I know they are legit from all the talk about them on here. Just not for me right now just buying grit and a few belts. They look like good prices for the tumblers though. So that will be my first site to look at when I am ready for a new tumbler. I am planing on getting a bit more corse grit since I am going to be doing lots of Obsidian! Kingsley North has a few other things I'm thinking about getting too. So that is better if I can get more stuff shipped together for less shipping cost! Hopefuly I win in some of the contest classes at fair next week to help pay for some of this stuff! Wish me luck! ~Colt

Graded grit is all one grade such as 80 grit. You can buy 60-90 for cheaper and it is graded to somewhere between 60 and 90 grit.
Graded grit is more effective in flat lapping but in tumbling it doesn't really matter.

1. Why would you expect a place called "The Rock Shed" to have anything but a stone age website? 2. Excuse me, but Tootsie Rolls are not candy. 3. Buy more grit at a time. You're going to use it anyway and it ain't going down in price. 4. Fill the FRB -- buy some tumbling rough too. They have nice stuff at a good price. I've never been disappointed.

Truth is, that sounded rather bossy. I would expect any selling site to at least have a top/side "links" bar. And one that has a good chance of returning customers I would expect to have a user account system set up. Tootsie rolls ain't candy? since when? I know about bulk and stuff, But I know what I'm doing. And I don't have that type of money. And don't want to drop tons of money into this hobby. My jewelry Business is more important! I have 50lb's + of tumble stuff. Nuff said! ~Colt

Colt - Not sure if you feel like taking a drive but there's a place called Consolidated Rock and Minerals over in Vacaville. I was out there last year and recall that they sold tumbling grit. At least I think they did - they had a section by the front door that was all basically dedicated to tumbling supplies. I was planning on heading out there in August during the family vacation to Walnut Creek and stocking up on grit as, like you, I'm not big on paying for postage if I don't have to. Their address is: 5115 Quinn Rd Vacaville, CA 95688, (707) 448-5525. It's also a cool shop. I think you're probably about 90 minutes from Vacaville so you might end up burning up the postage charge in gas money. By the way, I purchase from The Rock Shed pretty regularly - they're a solid operation. No complaints from me.

Yep. I love the Rock Shed and have dealt with them on a regular basis for years. Prices are decent, service is great and they've always been helpful. They have good tumbling rough , fast shipping and good packing too. Never found their site difficult to navigate. And Tootsie Rolls are candy in my book. I do agree about buying more grit, especially 60/90. I use six to eight times as much 60/90 as any other size grit or polish......Mel

Yep. I buy my blades and such for Johnsgems. Have never been able to beat his prices anywhere else on that kind of hardware. Super fast service and great communication from him too. Regarding the Rockshed: Shawn doesn't sell big containers (50#'rs) of grit so I mainly buy my finer grind, tripoli prepolish, and polish from him. For the price, their aluminum oxide polish is very good. Does a job, on agate and jasper, comparable to tin or cerium oxide at a much cheaper price so I use it all the time. Their prices for five pound bags of these materials are very competitive and since I don't use near as much in the last three stumbling stages, it's simply more convenient to get these from Shawn......Mel

I agree with Mel's post but will add that the Rockshed AO has successfully polished many softer rocks for me as well--the job is as good or better than tin oxide.

Colt,
Oh heh man, I was trying to make a joke connecting the "rock" to "stone age". I agree it's not very well done. Actually, my experience is that all the lapidary websites are fairly primitive, and a couple are almost useless -- literally. I hope I can make a joke about Tootsie Rolls too. I also happen to say, "Chocolate is not candy, it's real food", so don't take me too seriously about that kind of thing.
I sympathize with your concern about shipping and everything. When I need to buy stuff I practically make a spread sheet to see which combination of products, from which vendors, are going to give me the best overall price, 'cause I can't drop tons of money into this hobby either.
I've had nothing but good luck with the Rock Shed, but Graves has also been great.
I'll shut up now.

I bought from the Rock Shed on other people's recommendation on here. I'm brand new as well, and yes, his website is definitely old school, but his service is top notch. He had my package prepared and ready to ship within an hour or two of when I submitted the order. He knocked the estimated shipping down once it was packed, and yes - there was candy! (Tootsie rolls AND peppermints.) I was very happy with it.

Daniel, Oh ok, we good. lol. It also felt odd being told like that by someone that i have not seen before, since i started on the boards 2 months ago. And the attached photo may be of interest to many! For me, Well, It's just making me confused! The boxes are from checkout area of kingsley north. The left is one from about an hour ago, and the shipping was at $6.50. And When I saw that I was kindof shocked. because I had the same cart the night before and it said $9 shipping, but I had to remake it tonight because it was empty. So I was adding a few things to see if the shipping would go down more (doesnt make sense, but it kindof made sense to me if it already droped to $6.50 from $9 the night before)... or even just a few cents up. But when the cart reloaded, it was back up around $9 shipping. As you can see, everything is the same in the 2 boxes, besides the shipping cost. If it is posible for me to get the shipping down to $6 again.... I do want it to! lol. Do you guys think this was just a mess up. or should I ask them about it? ~Colt
