Had some problems with a tumble I was doing - lid popped off barrel - I put this down to the warmer weather causing a gas build up - second time it happened (very shortly after) I made an obvious discovery - trying to push the lid on my fingers went right through it.
Was obvious when thought about it - if tumbling wears down stones - cannot do lids much good either.
So keep an eye on your lids - it might save you the covering of muck I got lol.

Lids are the weak point on most tumblers.

Don`t for get to give your machine a good cleaning and reoiling. Mine leaked and almost seized up from the crap that seeped out. And yes burp it for the first few days anyhow.

Had a new idea, i'll drill a hole in the lid, that way do not have to keep burping them, i'll leave it week and go and see how it's progressing !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
LOL and anyone who listens to me is slightly more insane lol

Greetings "Mp166" nine times out of ten gas is caused by dirt on or in the stones or you are tumbling glass or Obsidian, rarely it is the Silicon Carbide thats contaminated with dirt or glass, put a heaped tablespoonful of borax, water & rocks & run for at least 24 hours - 7 days. Plastic pipe barrels are very noisy & are difficult to get lids on or off & seal they are prone for leaking also you must check the barrels at least twice a day for gas & leaks or you may have a nasty mess to clean up. Rubber barrels are at least a quarter of the noise of plastic pipe barrels easier to get lids on or off & seal but are a pain in the ass to re-seal when burping (Evans & Lortone). Rubber barrels do work with with the 3lb Beach tumbler, but you need to make some modification, 1st drill a hole in the casing, then need a wheel on a bolt with 7 - 10 nuts & 2 large washers, ideally you need a pair one at each end, but it is a complete strip-down to get access to the motor end. 1.36kg (3lb) Beach Tumbler with mod, 6lb Lortone barrel total weight 5.5kg (12.12lb) so i just done the far end, note the raised incline 20mm (0.75 inch) at the pulley end, this needs to be done as both Evans & Lortone barrels pull towards the rubber end, they will even climb hills up to 50mm (2 inches) & fall off, unless there is a wheel at both ends, the metal end goes the pulley the rubber end to the wheel as shown above. 3lb barrels run at 35RPM, 6lb barrels run at 20RPM, i have tried an Evans 3lb rubber, Lortone 2lb, 3lb, 6lb rubber barrels on 3lb Beach & Evans 6lb CR2 & Lortone 6lb & 12lb rubber barrels on Lortone C300 & the barrels always pull towards the rubber end of the barrel. The wheel i am using is the Lortone C series barrel guide (# 203-920). Evans & Beach rubber barrels can be found at Manchester Minerals (UK) in Sticky #1. -- I hail from (The Barony of Seabegs) Bonnybridge, Stirlingshire, U.K, where aliens (15mb) sometimes come for a visit & about 4 miles west from this monstrosity!
