Does anyone have a grinder\ shaper for sale or know where i can get one relatively cheap?
I have seen inland ones cheap, but have heard bad things about inland products.

What is a "Shaper/Grinder"? Do you mean a glass grinder for edge grinding/grooving? Or do you mean flat lap cab units?

If all you want to do is grind preforms, I'd suggest that you buy a Lortone 2 wheel arbor and 2 diamond wheels. 80 grit and 220 grit would do all of your preforms.

I'm still confused. If by preforms you mean grind edges of flat stones to finish in a tumbler any glass grinder with cylinder bit would work. If you want to cut stone edges and domes you need either wheels or flat laps.

For cabochons the term preform is made by cutting a rough shape out of a slab and then grinding the edges to just outside the marked cab. The dome is then ground on either a grinding wheel or grinding flat lap. Followed by finish grinding on a finer wheel or lap. Then several finer sanding steps before buffing with polish.
