I need to know how/where to dump my used grit from my tumbler? :help:
I know it's been said that; down the drain, is like sink suicide. But is dumping outside also bad? I have animals that will drink from anything, pool cover, muddy water, etc. I would be worried about them drinking the sludge water.
Or if I wanted to save the waste, any idea's? Right now I have some sand mixed in with a tiny bit of coarse grit in the tumbler with some broken beer bottle bits. I put them in there until I got some new grit.... witch I now have, but want to save the batch and media for later.
What method do you guys & gals use?

I have a 3 foot deep hole and about the size of a 5 gal bucket in diameter that is gravel filled as a well to dump the stuff in. I dug it with a post hole digger and put large size gravel in it. Makes for a nice disposal for the tumbling waste

Minus broken glass and any borax you can put silicon carbide grit waste in the garden. The minerals can be good for plants.

I've been thinking about this too. My worry is the aluminum oxide polish and how to dispose of it.

I never dispose of my ao polish. You can reuse it if it doesnt get contaminated with other grits. I pour it in containers, let it settle, and pour off excess water.

Another way of cutting down on waste that many on here do is eliminate the fine grind by letting your rocks run in coarse an extra week for the grit to break down.Dump once instead of twice.Cuts the expense down too.I pour mine on my garden rows.

Colt, check out "stoneage industries". com, Its been awhile since I've been to the site and if I remember right they have a listing of how much grit to use for all the perticulars. Mr. Cabojohn might be able to throw some light on that! ;D gr

ack, I think I've been using too much grit. I've been following my lortone guide which tends to recommend almost 2 tbsp per lb. I know for my 6lb barrels, its says to use 10 tbsp.

I strain my rocks through a wire mesh strainer to a bucket and in two days of South Texas it will dry into a grit puck which I dump in the outside trash can. Polish gets recycled.

I dump the slurry into a 5 gal bucket and use it when I start the next batch, and add more grit to it. Sometimes it has to be watered down as it can start to get pretty thick after awhile. Stuff that sticks to the rocks and not dumped into my bucket just gets rinsed into the grass.

After each grit step, I add water and a little dish soap to the tumbler and wash the rocks for 15 minutes in my vibe. If I add soap, is the AO un-recyleable?
