This tooth was in an old collection that I inherited. I've been told that it might be from the extinct relative to modern day pigs. Any ideas ? Pointer indicates the socket where another tooth would have been. Don

Darn cool tooth Don. t doesn't look like pig to me unless it's a front fang. I have a pig skull looking at me as I type. Curt

Looks like it would make a heck of a back scratcher...

After looking at several pictures of Mosasaur teeth and jaws, I'm convinced my tooth isn't one of those. Mosasaur teeth are angled straight down from the jaw bone, and are widely spaced. Mine juts forward from the jaw bone, much like a fang, and the socket for a second tooth is very close to the existing tooth.

Mosasaur teeth do curve but your teeth look closer together. I'm not convinced that it is not Mosasaur. Do have a museum/ college or something close you can take it to? Curt

Nothing nearby. On my next trip out to Rapid City, I'll take it to the S.D. School of Mines museum for positive ID. I'll have to call ahead to let them know I'm bringing it, since it's illegal to collect vertebrate fossils in this state without a license.

Not an expert but the tooth does not appear to be reptilian to me but rather that of a mammal. Looks almost lion like in the arrangement so I'd guess an ancient big cat of some kind....Mel

That's one awesome fang there! Hope you're able to get an ID at the museum.
