My 12# thumlers motors have been giving me fits lately, slowing down and nearly stopping such that I'm afraid to run either of them unless I'm home.
I took the tumbler assembly, (rollers etc) apart and cleaned it all with paint thinner but that has not helped. I think someone may have posted a tutorial on how to clean the motor. Am I dreaming?

Do you have an air compressor ? If so, blow all of the crud out of the motor, give each bearing a drop or 2 of oil, and see if that helps. It got my Thumlers 9 pound going again.

The dissassembly was for Lortone skeleton frame motors. Your motor may be bolted but could be rivets. You could check the motor shaft for wear by moving it up/down, etc. If the bearings are worn oil won't help. I think my old Thumlers have oil ports on the motors. Over oiling is not good either as excess oil can run into and saturate the motor windings, etc. I'm assuming after cleaning bearings with paint thinner you oiled them?

Thanks John and Don.. I did reoil the roller bearings...The motor housing has clips that I'll remove this weekend and give everything a good cleanup and check for wobbly shaft issues

Charlie, be warned that if your motor is like mine, those clips are a real bear to get off and back on. You might want to mark a line from one end of the motor to the other, so everything goes back together in proper alignment.

Don One of my tumblers is back in service for three days now, The other started skipping very soon and I took your advice and marked the orientation of the clips. Took it apart and cleaned but didn't help; Might be time for some new equipment but it might be a month or so before I do anything else. The only movement on the shaft seems to be in and out, not up and down, so it may not be the motor. Since it started working as was okay for an hour or so, 'll make one more check of the belt alignment and fit and the roller bearings before I replace the motor...maybe switch the roller bearings when I recarge and see what the result is... Lol. The rollers on my 16 lb Thumlers went out since you started this thread. Got about 15 lbs of rocks sitting in a bucket of water while I wait for replacement parts. Getting new parts for my 9 lb and UV-18 at the same time.
