Howdy folks, Was out clearing trails this morning and then followed that by a hike in the horse pasture to visit my horsie buddies and pick up junk. The pasture is bone dry and has lots of dirt exposed now so it was a good time to pick up wire fragments. old horseshoes and misc junk. Having no grass left has exposed a lot of Indian flint chippings too. Picked up a sack full of pretty pieces for the tumbler and these few artifacts. Pieces of really large and finely made knives, a couple of broken points and of all things, a rare unbroken one just kicked out of the topsoil by the horses. I'm always really tickled when I find me a good'un.....Mel PS: For those of you interested in such things, the complete point appears to be a Bulverde dart point approx. 4500-5000 years old ( early archaic). The base to the left of it is a Pedernales dart Point ( middle archaic 3000-4000 years old) We find a lot of point types here but those are the two types most often encountered. There is a big Bulverde camp just down the hill from the house. The Indians apparently camped there to make use of the flint quarry on the hill.

Collecting artifacts while cleaning up the pasture, it doesn't get much better than that! Nice finds!

Fantastic pieces Mel. Do you have somewhere you display your finds? Would make cool conversation pieces.

Nate: I have a little of my stuff in Riker mounts but I actually have a bit much to display so most is in a cabinet sorted into drawers and boxes. I used to really be into artifacts and go on trips specifically for hunting them, and my AG contacts made it pretty easy to get permission to go on private lands. Now though, I'm too darn busy to go on digs or formal hunts. Stuff is all over this ranch though and it's still fun to walk out and occasionally find a nice piece.......Mel

Wow that is really cool. When my wife was a kid she discovered all kinds of fossils and sharks teeth a few blocks from her home in Colts Neck NJ. Not such a big deal except that Colts neck is not on the shore, it is inland. Her innocent discovery triggered a stampede of scientists to the area known as Big Brook. It seems as though she discovered what was then an unknown find of such things. To this day universities and museums are still conducting field trips to Big Brook and Big Brook is still producing an abundance of interesting material. Stu

Mel-
My parents grew up in western Wyoming/Eastern Idaho and she often reflects about the times they used to plow up lots of points. I still criticize her for not keeping track of them. I would love to have a collection of the stuff she used to find as a kid trailing her father's plow horses.
