Hi Guys I found this yesterday. I think its unusual for the area. That would be 19th Ave & Pinnacle Peak for local hounders My guess is that its chert. Its real fine grained and will definitely knapp Good size hunk and I look forward to polishing a piece Thanks for looking and comments Ed

Yo Ed! It be a flint! Take a couple of scrap pieces and see if it will give you a spark. Right colors for flint

Yo back Gary! I been meaning to spark it. Maybe later tonight. But do you think that its an unusual area to find chert or flint ? Its also the area where I found that chalcedony, which I found another piece, laying next to that dark beauty

Not sure at all Ed about the area. When I was in the valley, hounding was unknown to me as it is now. I was talking w/Ted about chert and flint some months back and I believe he said that chert and flint are basically about the same composition of mineral. Maybe he will see this and chime in on your ID question That piece looks very hard to me from the pic and will certainly test your diamonds if it's flint. Chert in my opinion is a little easier to cut and work. although, both are patience makers.

Looks like chert , less silica than flint , not glassy feeling, somewhat sandy-grainy feeling . mineralogicaly the same Though
