I have been getting great results knapping blades and points from the Flint Ridge material I dug a couple months ago. My skills are improved enough that I decided to try to haft some handles out of mullberry wood and make a few replicas of the ancient Indian type knives. I stripped the bark and split the halves and then carved the ends to fit the blades. Then I wrapped them with sinew(actually a synthetic waxed nylon thread) and got everything tight and snug. The points I made ended up being about 2" long - one is side notched and the other I tanged to see which would mount the best. Both knives turned out great and I cant wait to try some bigger sets with different type handles like horn or bone. Here is a pic of the completed knives, and then some close-ups of the blades before/after.... Thanks for looking! Dave

Thanks guys for the compliments. I cant wait to start on some more.. The whole project taught me how hard it was for the ancient natives to make the tools they needed to survive. I hope to make a variety of the tools and weapons that they used.

Nice looking knives! If you want to go paleo, go to your local butcher shop for sinew. If you get really friendly with the butcher, you can get the back sinew, but the leg is always available. Woody

Woody - Its funny that you mentioned it. My wife has a cousin that does meat processing on the side. He does the usual, but also wild game for hunting season. I was just thinking of asking him about saving some sinew (and maybe some hides and bone too) for me to try. If Im going to make true replicas I might as well use the real thing! ;D

Nice work Dave! Have you tried knapping that fossiliferous flint you hounded near the power dam?

Thanks Brian- I have done a couple of points out of my power dam material and they turned out good. The only problem is finding a big enough piece that doesnt have the freeze/thaw fractures. It tends to make it hard to get good flaking patterns. I have a couple pictures somewhere- I'll have to dig them up to show you how cool the fossils stand out in the points.
