Here are two knives I made today. The haft carvings are Coast Salish inspired. The first is an Eagle carved from Yellow Cedar with silver sheen obsidian. the second is a Coast Salish Sea Monster carved in Mahogany, with Mahogany obsidian. Woody Eagle Sea Monster

Very nice work woody! I'm curious, how functional are the blades?

Don:
For sharpness, the blades can be very functional. However, the obsidian is very brittle and will break, or chip easily. They will skin, and field dress a Deer or Elk as well if not better than steel.
Nearly all of the blades I make, are art, and intentionally dulled to prevent curious people testing that sharpness with a finger. for some reason unknown to me most women will run a finger or thumb on the blade to see if it will cut. If not dulled that cut will be to the bone. If someone wants a sharp one, I will not dull it, but I do warn them of the sharpness.. Woody

Beautiful! I think that when holding strongly the first one, you can close the eagle's beak, cannot you? Great match of blade and handle in the 2nd one.

Those are awesome Woody! I really like the first one with the silver sheen blade. It gives me some great ideas as I start to work on crafting my own stone knives.
