After having one get a hole in the middle and the new one wearing thin in the same spot I decided there had to be a better way. Took a piece of 1/8 inch plexiglass. Cut it round, drilled some holes and stuck it under the lid. No leaks, ran for two months. Was still worried about the cracks that brittle stuff can get. As the kids are not to even on tightening the wingnuts.
So picked up a 1/8x12x12 sheet of HDPE. Was $4.46 at Grainger. This stuff is not brittle and cuts and drills like butter. Has 4000 PSI, impact strength. Sealed tight next to the rubber liner in the barrel. Will not crack. I look for it to last longer than the liner and no more buying the gaskets and shipping.

Good info. I'll have to remember that one. We have a tractor parts place here that sells HDPE material.

The Model B barrel, lid and gasket should be under warranty for 5 years. I've run mine for 2 years with no problem. How long did it take you to develop problems?

Nothing wrong with the lid. The gasket is what wore thin. And it's not under warranty. The Rubber Lid Gasket is 5 dollars plus shipping. The HDPE will out last it by 20 or more years if not longer for 4.46.

I make new gaskets from old innertubes and/or some vinyl sheet that we use to make shower pans for tile showers. Both work good and are easy to make. I use an empty .223 shell in a cordless drill to cut the holes, works like a champ. You can get the innertubes from your local tire shop, they give away the ones with the holes in them.
