My friend from work, Dave Perry, has been teaching me alot about knapping skills, and I have been picking it up much better now. I like to work with stone, but he does most of his work in volcanic glass and man-made glass too. He has been trying to get me to work glass for about a year, so I finally gave in and decided to give it a try. In the end, I think they came out fair, but it needed a delicate touch(which I need to learn - I'm used to working stone a lot harder to get the flakes), and a little bloodshed - glass cuts very easily I found out. The 3 on the top/right are Obsidian (black and mahogany) and the bottom is from Flint Ridge material (not glass, but I just threw it in too). The longest point is about 3 1/2", with the shortest at about 2 1/2". Thanks for looking! Dave

Dave:
Nice work! It has been said that knapping is a one man blood sport..............probably from a knapper that works obsidian, or glass. One of the first things to learn with obsidian is to NOT use your hand to brush away flakes. I had to learn this by doing. Woody

Thanks Fossilman and Woody!
Woody - I used about half bottle of liquid skin to seal up all the cuts! I made the mistake of using my thumbs to check and wipe the piece after each flake came off but the worst were the slivers that somehow made it into my boots and even cut my feet up. One man bloodsport is right!!

Thanks guys for the compliments! :
Michael - Time and tonage are true. My friend tells me it takes a ton of stone to learn the basic skills and I know that each piece teaches me something new. I still break and ruin more than I make, but the learning is so enjoyable.
Fossilman- My friend works glass for about 5 days in a row and then takes a week off to let his hands heal. But he says you get used to it after a while. He cranks out about 30 points a week, so the reward must be worth the time in blood. ;D
