Ok - I've had this chunk of rough Youngite laying around for a couple years. I've tried to sell it a few times and no one had any interest. So I finally chucked it up and started cutting. The sphere blank I'm cutting is measured out at 4.25" - so after grinding it should yeild close to 3-7/8" - 4" finished sphere. I took careful cuts to try and salvage a great hollow pocket, however by the time I cut my corners on the blank I think I'll lose a high percentage of it. It was a tough call - cut for a small sphere and get a hollow pocket, or cut for maximum size (which of course I opted for) I'll try to take more photo's along the way so you can see the process of sphere making.

Ok late last night I was trying to finish up the cube and ran into a spot in the rock I really didn't like - So I plan to change my idea. Rather than shoot for maximum size I'll be cutting it much smaller and shoot for the best quality - I'm guessing the size is going to drop down to about 2.5" - Just another part of cutting rock!

Definitely keep the pix coming. Someday (wayyyy down the line) I'd like to build a sphere machine, and I'm intrigued by how this is done.
Looks like it'll be a really cool sphere when it's done!
