Present you here with my first attempt of creating something in Jade. Have started this Jade a couple of months ago and still trying to improve on. This is what I started with: After a couple of weeks of frustration I got to here: So now, after having been told off on Facebook by a frank friend, I went back to it and re-cut, refined and resanded several times over. It looks fantastic at hand, but the pictures show clearly that it still needs yet more sanding. So now, back to sanding at 600 grid. ;D Thanks for any input you might have to get this piece done!

That’s superb. Where did you get the idea for it’s design?

The idea came on the way. Thanks for the nice words. Started with wanting to create a hollow orb (one of the bands got too thin and broke, so I removed a second). Somewhere, sometimes during that process, I thought; Ok, now you got it messed up already, so why not jump a few grades (remember I only started cabbing a few months back) and try something more elaborate for practice. As I am right-handed, but hold all my stones during any work in my left; it became a "left"hand. It was never meant to actually work out the way it did. It's nice, but not yet picture-perfect.

Thank you all for the kind words. When you are having fun with something everything goes. Its, when I have to do something, that things turn out awkward. I have been extremely lucky this whole year. Things turned nearly always out better than expected, but that's more luck than actual knowledge/talent.

Wow, great job. People don't fully appreciate how difficult and time consuming it is to sand jade till they do it. Tim

Kurt: Welcome to this board. I am sure you will be enhancing the lives of many here with your carving. I was surprised this was your first work in jade. Woody

I was surprised this was your first work in jade. Woody Woody: Being in Hong Kong or China naturally leads one to belief that Jade would be the first thing to try out in this hobby. But unfortunately, it's well known that you can not trust anyone in this industry here. I would not trust even long-term friends when it comes to jade. So Jade has always been a put-off. Would I have bought this piece locally, any seller would have insisted that it is Burmese and charged me accordingly. Most shops here sell American and Australian Jade as Burmese, and no-one seems to take notice.

How true it is. You can not trust your best friend there. Their take on it is "if you do not know how much it is worth it is your fault if you pay to much". Great job and just your first attempt. I have been afraid to destroy good jade so have stuck with Chinese soapstone and American alabaster. Easier and cheaper learning material. lol Jim btw. If you have a Chinese friend buy the material for you it will cost a lot less.

There are only two problems with someone buying for you; First comes rule number one "trust no-one" when it comes to jade. Second I would not be able to allow someone else buy something that I did not hold personally. I have come to buy things off the internet, because I can see what I get at a reasonable price, and the few times I did get rubbish, allowed me to learn patience and look more carefully. So in the end, I will never get prices to compete with those 99 cent cabs, but at least I can only blame myself if things do not work out. As for jade itself, I do not have to have it. For the time being I have far to much fun with other materials. So the few pieces that I still have will eventually be carved up in some way and it does not really matter how much they cost. To be honest, I treasure some other much cheaper material much more. Jade is like diamonds; everyone wants the best, yet the best is not always the most expensive or rarest. In Diamond as example: I favor yellow (the type that appears brownish green) much more than white. They cost 15-20% of the whites and can have fire that you can see at 50 yards; yet no-one seems to want them. I don't follow trends, I try to follow my own taste, for better or worse.

Very cool KK, Jade is souch a tough stone that it can really take a lot of patiance to get a good finish on it. I have been tumbling some jade for about 4 months now and by the looks of things it will still be many weeks before it is finished to my satisfaction. Keep up the patience and the good work, looks good so far.
