Hey all, I was just wondering if anyone who got one of those water trays from me ever got around to actually building their flat laps.

You caught me Ed. Still setting off to the side waiting for me to put together. I have everything just setting there but I am still looking for something to reduce the speed or make it adjustable. I am thinking of maybe a router speed control unit. I want to set it up to use for polishing with diamond paste. I'm just thinking the 1750 rpm at the shaft will be too fast out near the edge with a 6 or 8 inch plate??? Maybe I am using that as an excuse not to get going on it. I promise to get cracking on it and post some photos when I get it finished. Bill

Bumping this back up with a question..... I plan on using a 1/3 hp motor for my flat lap. What does anyone think of using a router speed control for this motor? It states it will work on any router 3 1/2 hp or less and is rated at 15 amps. Sure sounds like it might work. The only thing I am not sure on is that my motor is capacitor start, would that have any ill effects? Below is a link to what I am thinking about using. Thanks, Bill www.mlcswoodworking.com/orderstatus/html/smarthtml/pages/speedcon.html

Bill, Post some pics of your progress. I'm terrible at seeing how this is going to work...and yes Ed, you got me. Of course, I've been super busy with out-of-town....and I think I'll be going again really soon on the road. We're actually doing two Lowes in Nevada and one more in New Mexico. Maybe when winter rolls around, I'll have less on my plate. Steve

Still gathering parts. Haven't had much time as my Grandmother has been in and out of the hospital a lot in the past couple of months. I'm glad someone brought this up as I have been meaning to ask what to use for the lap. Should I just buy a standard lap, or has anyone fabricated one? I want to try and make one to use interchangeable disks for use with diamond powder.

Sorry to hear about your Grandmother, hope she's doing okay now. As for the laps, here's a good link to help you out. lopacki.com/flatlaps/You can either buy a master lap from him or if you have a shop that sells plexi-glass, you can have them cut an 8" circle out of 1/4" plexi and drill a 1/2" hole in the center and use that as a master lap. If you or anyone else has any more questions, feel free to drop me a PM and I will get you in the right direction.

No excuses other than poverty and time---lot of one, none of the other. And, frankly, it's too bloody hot to even venture to the garage workshop. I suspect it will be come a cooler weather project. Problem is, cooler weather doesn't get here till at least October. matt

Question about laps. If the motor is located underneath the round plate thingy, (tech talk),... how do you keep the water and mess out of the motor?

Harry, I had access to some water trays that sat on top of the motor that would collect the water and drain it off to the side through a piece of tubing. I think I may have one left if you're interested.
