I got it down to where I don't need to waste so much wire, that was one of the things I did not like either.
You did good for your first ring. I cut my strands at 8 inches and when all is said and done I only need to trim off about 1/2 inch or less of wire depending on largest size of the adjustment

I think that ring looks great! And your wrapping style on that Tiger Eye is very nice.

yeah, I noticed that the instructions waste a lot of wire. I've been cutting mine at 10" and that seems plenty, only have a little left when I'm done. I to long shanks though, usually wrap to about 2-3/4". works out pretty well for me.
