Amazing looking tile job Jamie! I have to admit I would have my nose to it looking over every slab there! I'd never make it into the store ;D It looks like the place has had a paint job since I was last there also. Lookin real sharp.
BTW, I have a back patio waiting here for you! Steve

Oh and that javelina encounter sounds scary. I have heard they can be vicious for their small size. My mom sees a herd that regularly goes through her compost pile in Sedona. Glad to hear Jim is OK

Jamie did an amazing job on this porch! The pictures do not do it justice! I have seen it in person, it is breathtaking, and I told Jamie to enter it in a contest. She would win!

Jamie that is one awesome project and is really beautiful! Are the slab surfaces level with the surface or do they stand slightly about the surface? Picture makes it kind of look that way. Anyway, so darn neat it does seem a shame to walk on it and risk breaking any of those pretty slabs. That Javelina story is wild! I can sure think of a things a lot more fun than having a rabid javelina chase me around the kitchen biting me. Daaaang!....Mel

Hi Mel, the slabs aren't quite as thick as the tiles so I just used a bit more thinset under them to compensate for the difference in height. The grout lines around the slabs were considerably larger than what you would see in a tiled floor and that will give it stability.
Jim was so calm when he was telling us that story, boy I had a lot of questions after hearing that one....

I just looked at the pictures again and I see what you are saying. When the grout is added a float is used to push the grout down into the gaps between the tiles and or slabs, at that point the floor is level. When the surface of floor is sponged off some of the grout is removed from the grout lines as well but that is the final result for any type of tiling material whether it's natural or manmade. It may just be more noticeable because the grouted areas are so large. The surface of the porch was surprisingly level when it was finished, I say that because I laid the floor over the foundation slab that has been there for almost 80 years. A few chunks of concrete were missing and a couple cracks ran the width of the porch from the house settling but grouting everything does wonders for leveling a surface.

Jamie,
You did a fantastic job. It is surely is a one of a kind entry and a great way to show off what the store has to offer. Although if I would have done it I know I would have had a hard time setting some of those pieces without going "oh that would make a nice cab or maybe this one, how about that one" ;D. I have set a lot of tile and know how much work you put in to it and you really did a great job.

Absolutely unique and one of a kind. I'll bet there are a lot of wealthy McMansion types who would pay good money for a one of a kind porch or entryway. Start advertising in Scottsdale!
