One of my employee's buddy helped us out earlier this year during special event we held at our shop (he ran the BBQ). After it was over I went to pay him, but he instead asked if I would make him a custom shift knob out of some red tiger eye (he owns a red Honda) he saw in my little work shed. He asked for this long shape with a slight taper at the bottom and a rounded top. I've never done anything like this, but found that I could get a reasonable shape using my expanding drum unit. Red Tiger Eye Shift Knob by Mystic Koi, on Flickr I used a diamond core bit to drill out the bottom, and then used 220 epoxy to glue in a helicoil of the correct thread size. Red Tiger Eye Shift Knob by Mystic Koi, on Flickr All my employees are young Honda dudes (of course), and so did a test fit on one of their cars. Fits great! Red Tiger Eye Shift Knob by Mystic Koi, on Flickr It feels very strong, but I don't know if it will hold up from all the vibration and gear bashing these guys will do? Anyway, I'm thinking of making one for my '70 Chevelle SS next. Regards, Bill

Looks great. Talk about upgrading. Should last for a long while, Tiger-eye survives quite a bit of beating as long as there is no (or little) matrix.

Cool shape! - Many years ago I made a calcite sphere from Oregon and it never polished the way I wanted it to - So I drilled and placed a insert and it's been in my toyota truck since! Over the years the constant use and oils in my hands have actually polished it better.
Thanks for sharing!

Interesting... good to know that it has lasted so long! I'm and old guy (see photo), and so think I would prefer the sphere shape as opposed to this cylinder. Anyway, I don't own, nor can I afford a sphere machine and so will have to try and make one by hand or spend some time at the lapidary club and use theirs. Here I am on the day I received my Chevelle some 5 years ago. I had it delivered from a barkeep back in Pennsylvania! It has the classic Hurst 4-speed white shift knob. Hmmm... perhaps something in red and black?

Sweet shift knob, and sweet car. Back in the 30's & 40's stone sphere shift knobs were imported from Germany. They were a dress up item back then, much like a sharp set of mags are today. In high school I had a hopped up 28 Ford with a bulls eye agate shift knob which I found in a scrap metal yard. Sure wish I'd kept the knob when I sold the car.
