Got this Montana slab for nearly 8 months and had no idea as to how to get the inclusions to pop. So finally a few days ago, I needed something special for our last contest of the year and I thought I would give it a try. Now I'm not sure if it even qualifies for a cabbing contest, hence I got two questions: 1.) What do you call those inclusions (its not moss or Plume) Preform and Rough Slab 2.) It's not really a cab, but I don't think its carving either, so how do you classify this piece and shape? Sorry its only I-pone pictures, will change the pictures when I get the other camera back. So, in the end started with a pebble, got slabbed and ended up as a pebble. LOL

Nice cab Kurt. I'd call the inclusion a dendrite.

Thanks Sam, so you would still call it a cab despite being completely worked in the round?

hard to say. I've seen people do double sided cabs, domed on both sides but the "cabochon" definition gets pretty loose at that point. I'd be more inclined to call this one a carving.

Why do you say it's not a cab? Is is because it doesn't have a flat back? I'd still call it a cab. Or, to be more accurate, you could name it pendeloque.
Anyway, no matter how you name it, it's a beauty.

It's really a beautiful piece! I'd go with the dendrite and call it a freeform ... I'd like to say cab but, yeah, it is a carving. Really gorgeous piece!

Very nicely done piece. I would agree with the freeform cabachon designation.

Still not a good picture, but better than the last. Thanks for all your interpretations.

Either way, just like a cab, when you hang it in some way it would be called a pendant. And a very beautiful one at that. It would be nice if you showed it hanging on a chest like you did before with one of your carvings. Jim

Jim, that's something I still gonna have to figure out. I don't do any metal-work, so I need to come up with something that does not interfere with the light-play.

Very neat! I like how you framed the dendrite within the agate.

Very, very nice piece!!! I'm a huge fan of Montana Agate so this is a real treat for me!
It seems to me we're splitting hairs here trying to categorize your piece,,,, Is it 1/2 full or 1/2 empty?
Why not start a new category of your own and call it a "Carve-O-Chon"?
This would help to win a contest as it is in it's own category and would truly be a "one of a kind"!
In any case or what ever you call it,,,I call it beautiful!

Why not start a new category of your own and call it a "Carve-O-Chon"? connrock Thank you Connrock, I think you might become right. LOL I was thinking this past few days,.... and it came to me that it might be a good idea to do a 80% surface covering leaf pattern around the dendrite; like a leaf shriveling up. Or use the bottom, to create two hands holding up the "Flower". Will see what the future holds, I'm in no hurry and there is no buyer waiting, so anything can happen, given the time......... Oh,.. Yeah,... best picture yet

I would call it a double sided free form pendant. Definatly one of a kind. Over the top on the cool scale. I am not sure just how to set it, a plain bell cap would work but it would devalue the cab, a good wire wrapper would be able to accent the piece, and give a good return. I like it. Good Job "ATTA BOY"
