Here is my latest attempt at a knife using my flintknapping and carving skills, both of which are moderate at best. A friend of mine gave me a tri-flow obsidian trade blank that he had roughed out, and it was the perfect piece to attempt a Hopewell style blade. It ended up being about 3 1/2" long from tip to base, and one of my best points to date. I also decided to mount it in a hand carved eagle style handle that I had made out of mullberry wood from the back yard wood pile. I ended up using a black laquer finish in the carving grooves to make it stand out on the light colored wood. All in all, the knife ended up at about 9" total in length, and balanced out pretty even for the stone to wood ratio. Here are some pics.... Thanks for looking! Dave

Very Cool Dave! I tried this many years ago and could never finish a point without breaking it. steve

Wow Dave, that edge is so thin you can see through it! Excellent job!

Super Job! I am like Steve and could only make piles of chips when I attempted knapping. John

Nicely done. I like seeing the 'low-tech' work.

Very nice, Dave! I really like the addition of the eagle carving.

Thanks everyone!
Steve &J John - I still end up breaking more than I make. I sometimes get discouraged because my knapping friend can whip out really great points in 15-20 minutes and he ends up using the chips for smaller points too.
Toad - Thanks ;D The low tech approach is what my friend and I are going for in our tool making venue. Trying to make them look like the Ancients would have done them.
