I am new to fossil collecting, and wonder if there are any good books you experienced collectors might recommend to help me identify specimens.

A good basic book would be the Audubon Guide to North American Fossils, by Thompson. Also a google search for fossils found in your state will yield lots of info. If this is something you want to stick with, there are tons of other fossil books out there, and you can tie up tons of money in them. Don

I have the "Audubon Guide to North American Fossils",plus several other fossil and dino publications....The best book so far for people like us,that do it as a hobby would be "The Fossil Book" by Carroll Lane Fenton and Mildred Adams Fenton...... It covers it all and its illustrated, plus lots of information, that you can understand... I bought mine used off of Amazon,com.........(great price too)

I found the public library to be helpful when trying to ID area fossils. Here I found the Field Guide to Texas Fossils to be a great resource. Try to locate a field guide for your state or region. The Audubon Guide covers all of North America but is not a complete listing of all known fossils. A specific area guide is most helpful. Many times a soil map can be aquired from a local college or aggregate company. It will tell you the correct age of formation you are hunting in. I got one here for $8 and with it is a guide to specific spots and what fossils to look for in that area. Best of luck to ya.

Index Fossils of North America by Shimer and Schrock, to me, is a must have book. Came out in 1944 and again in 1947 and I think it's been reprinted since. You can see it for sale on Amazon for as much as $300 but I got one through Amazon for $50 which was a deal. You just have to keep checking. I also like Field guide to Texas fossils by Finsley,, The Fossil Book by Fenton and Fenton, and A Pictorial Guide to Fossils by Gerald Case.....Mel
