Well today was a big day. again.
I received the 120 diamond wheel today at work, and had to actually work the rest of the day with it sitting there teasing me.
I got home, had dinner with the family, took my oldest daughter out on a date, came home and went to the garage.
I pulled the old SiC wheel ("old" being approximately 2 weeks) and compared the old wheel to the new - which was the same size wheel that I started with on the SiC:
I put the new wheel on the machine and the expando back on:
NOW, I got some new lights, I've been looking all over for these gooseneck lights that have the clamp-on bases. I know my work area is a little cluttered, but I cleaned up after I got the new lights on. I LOVE all the light:
I even got the one with the magnifying glass. We'll have to see if it gets too much residue on it:
I dressed the wheel with some Wyoming Jade. It's really hard and right now I have a ton of it just laying around (long story).
I picked a piece of some jasper that had some cool colors and patterns. They were hard to see but I was interested enough to give it a try. I got this in a bag of saw scrap that I ordered at the beginning of January off eBay.
I drew some crude cut lines on top so I could trim it a little with the saw.
MAN O LIVIN' that 120 diamond wheel is awesome. I cut what I could and it shaped SUPER fast with the wheel.
For some reason, I couldn't get the dop stick to stay on the stone. I washed it with dish detergent and hot water to remove any oil from the slab saw just like I have been doing, but in spite of this the dop kept popping off, so I opted to try to go on without it.
I moved rather quickly on to the SiC belts and onto a polish. Then I dropped the stone and it broke badly:
Not to be deterred, I went back to the amazing diamond wheel and quickly reshaped and domed the broken part of the stone.
A few passes on the SiC belts, and onto a 1200 polish. Again it is late so I am not going to move to 14000 tonight, but there are NO scratches, pits, low spots or major flaws with this one, in spite of it's less-than-ideal upbringing. Also I REALLY like the pattern:

Does anyone know what this might be? It is hard, very jasper-like so I assume it is jasper, but I haven't seen anything like it.
************************************************
In the end, I can see that I need to do a little better job polishing, but with all the setup I ran a lot longer than I wanted to so I will stop for now.
Thanks again to everyone who is being so encouraging and giving me all the great advice. I'll keep doing this for a while (cab a day) until everyone gets sick of me. Hopefully this can help someone else get going sometime down the road.
