My polishing pad sits in under the same hood as the wet grinding wheel and expando. In addition to the very high risk for contamination of coarser grit, the pad is hard to use in the small space of my Lortone combination machine.
I asked about extending the arbor and Jim (wampidy) suggested all thread and couplers. I ran out to home depot and in a quick few minutes had something put together that I am happy with.
I bought 12" of 1/4-20 all thread and a pack of 3 couplers. I used a couple nuts and washers I already had.
I eyeballed the length, air grinder cut off and removed burrs on the all thread, and put it all in the arbor and threaded the pad on.
I let it run with and without the pad and things seemed solid.
Parts were ~$5
There isn't a whole lot of clearance with the drain tube, but it is clear all around.
I kept the entire length of the all-thread covered with a spare coupler and the extra nuts so it added some diameter and hopefully sturdiness to the set up.
So far I have been able to polish several cabs with no problems. Someone suggested that the polish might sling off, but I like to rub the paste completely into the pad using the stone I am about to polish and I haven't had any sling off yet. I use diamond paste somewhat sparingly too, so I am not having this problem.
As I was posting the pics, jakesrocks suggested that there are actually arbor extenders already (called stand-offs):
www.accuratescrew.com/CatalogPage.aspx?ProdCat=STFTHDQ_MFH
I don't know if I could get the right length, and at some point having these "stacked" seems risky.
Here are some pics of my solution:
Without the hood:
Close up:
With the polishing pad, running:
Let me know if you do anything similar and post images!
