Well I decided to open the vibe this morning to see how things were coming. When I opened it I was surprised to see grit covering everything: I was immediately concerned and had a look at the heart I've been working for Nancy. It seems to be wrecked: I figured everything was probably ruined so I started pulling things out. As it turned out, the grit was just plastic bits from the new barrel, and the damage to the heart I think is just the material. I went ahead and showed Nancy the heart, since it won't work as a gift now. I have an alternate plan for the holiday, but it is a little bit of a bummer to have the heart come out so poorly. Here are singe other stones I pulled out just to see progress. The Mooka Jasper looks the best (shiniest), the black Wyoming Jade is really hard and isn't shiny yet. The wonderstone is smooth to the touch but has a porous surface. Overall I an happy with what I am seeing in spite of the heart. daharsh.net/rock/vibeday2a.jpg [/img] daharsh.net/rock/vibeday2b.jpg [/img] daharsh.net/rock/vibeday2c.jpg [/img] daharsh.net/rock/vibeday2d.jpg [/img] daharsh.net/rock/vibeday2e.jpg [/img] daharsh.net/rock/vibeday2f.jpg [/img]

Hey John, What a bummer about the broken heart. What do you think caused it to break? Stu

Stu, someone said that it is spidsr man jasper, which is mixed hardness and tricky to polish. I can confirm both are true.

Yep, Spiderman Jasper is actually more of a mixed hardness rhyolite type stuff and is very difficult to polish in a tumbler due to a tendency for the softer areas to undercut badly. It's even a booger on the diamond wheels....Mel

Yeah, I decided to put it in the vibe after it was coming apart on the 600 grit belt.
Good learning exercise.

I have some odd pitting like that too on some of mine, and I don't think it's because of the material. It did it to my perfectly smooth already glass as well (I use glass for filler), and I KNOW there was absolutely not a speck of hardness change in the spots it happened... it was mechanical damage from another piece.
For the heart, can you finish the polish by hand so you don't have to worry about further pitting? You should be able to just polish it with a dremel, a bit of your tumbler grit in the right grades (from here, 1000- AO Polish), and a felt bob. I say this because your heart is nearly done, and from what I can see, doing manual grit changes with a dremel might finish it for you completely within a 1/2 an hour, without worrying about pitting beyond your control?
The other rocks look great!!!
