I was wondering why you didn't post them on here. Great pieces and very inspirational! We're having a storm here today so I'm home early from work... good time to crack the book and start figuring the wrapping thing out. Where do you guys get wire?

I get my wire from Rio Grande. The cost of a 1# spool of square and 1/2# of half round copper is not very much and , in my opinion, a perfect way to start learning.

They're absolutely beautiful but frustrating too, as I know absolutely no one who will wear, much less buy, anything made with base metal (stainless steel or copper wire). Therefore I wouldn't even be able to give them as a gift. I still have a tiny stash of silver and 14Kt GF, but when it's gone, I think I'm gone from the wire wrapping end of things. Very, very frustrating. Do you sell mostly or only to young people? They seem more open to alternative materials?

I mostly sell to people in their 40s+. When people like them I say they're wrapped i stainless ad they do't care. It's not about the metal it's about the stone. I have the majority of my stuff in silver but sell way more copper, brass and steel cause of a little bit cheaper price. I sold 2 of these geodes last wknd at a gun show. If you look at my etsy store you'll see my simple wraps just outline the stones. I might only pull 10-15 cabs out of 100lbs of rock the rest go into my cheap, er, I mean inexpensive pendants.

I think you're right about that, Dave. I always look to the stone first and one of the things I really love about your work is that the stones are so incredible! Some metals I do shy from...copper is one, but if the rock is good enough and I really like it, I've been known to buy that as well. I love your silver stuff, but your quality of wrapping is just as good with the copper and brass...haven't seen the stainless in person yet, as your silver. Sometimes, especially with wire wrapped pieces, I can really see the advantages of stainless for cleaning! Doesn't tarnish the way that silver does.

Thanks for the interesting answer, DB. That's really unusual in my area. Around here, by the time you're in your forties you've switched to gold/platinum if you're reasonably successful or silver will be worn to prove you're creative. And even if it's a gift, people will ask all kinds of questions to pin down the metal, stone, etcetera. I only see stainless worn in piercings. Copper and brass never. I see vintage base metal items as cabinet pieces or in collectible displays but I don't see them worn. New base metals, I don't see 'em worn at all. Maybe I hang around too much with the shallow conspicuous consumption crowd...heh.

It may be the conservative ranching crowd. Peope say often that they don't like silver because it's cold while copper is such a warm color. Interesting because this winter has been what I imagine a hard winter in Texas to be like, actually like one I went through at Ft Hood many years ago. But I think I try to match the copper and brass to the colors of the stone and if it's a mighty fine stone then definitely silver. I only have opals in 18K and 22K which people won't buy because of price and feeling like that's what people would steal.
