I have another customer that wants a mermaid here is what the quartz slab that I needed was for ![](http://i965.photobucket.com/albums/ae133/2badfrog/nextjob.jpg) Since I had to back this piece they wanted it to be translucent to clear backing. More pictures to follow as I get working on this here are the quartz and opal combined top ![](http://i965.photobucket.com/albums/ae133/2badfrog/nextcarvingglueup.jpg) bottom ![](http://i965.photobucket.com/albums/ae133/2badfrog/nextcarvingglueup2.jpg) shaped and layout completed ![](http://i965.photobucket.com/albums/ae133/2badfrog/mermaidb.jpg) starting the process of carving ![](http://i965.photobucket.com/albums/ae133/2badfrog/mermaid2-1.jpg) alittle more detail ![](http://i965.photobucket.com/albums/ae133/2badfrog/mermaid2b.jpg) its getting there ![](http://i965.photobucket.com/albums/ae133/2badfrog/mermaid2c.jpg) lots of refining and polishing left to do ![](http://i965.photobucket.com/albums/ae133/2badfrog/mermaid2d.jpg) all done ![](http://i965.photobucket.com/albums/ae133/2badfrog/mermaid2e.jpg)

I never seen any of your mermaid, Diane and I'm probably missing something here but why did you glue the blue opal together ? because you didn't have a a large enough piece for the project? good workings Ed

Its giving me desire to do a doublet as the quartz makes it have a 3d effect

So are you aiming for a cameo effect, or will you not actually get down to the quartz?

no cameo, I don't want to get down to the quartz but it may happen in spots.

where do you get the quartz for the backer ? is it natural stone or specially made for these projects? Thanks Ed

I put this in the "buy sell trade" area forum.rocktumblinghobby.com/index.cgi?board=buysell&action=display&thread=50768and also I buy off of ebay, I used a slab of natural quartz to do this as per request of the person this is for I don't have a problem using glass for backer or caps. I use obsidian for backer where dark stone is needed. You can use most any hard stone as a backer. crystal clear glass and quartz for caps
