I don't cut cabs like most of you do. I would love to and it may just be in my future. In the meantime, I'm sharing my passion for collecting. Here is a tuxedo agate. The second I saw this, I grabbed it. Unfortunately, it is more like a slab than a cab. It was a pain to wrap and I was somewhat limited without using more wire than I wanted to (those pesky bail wires!). Anyway, the seller called this untreated. Come to find out, it is Brazilian agate, which is treated. I prefer untreated stones, but this is just so dang cool!! So, does anyone know the treatment? Maybe sugar like the opal (the name escapes me)? Attachments:

It's very pretty!
I think the usual treatment for this type of agate is to soak it in sugar water and then heat treat it, which then enhances the band coloring.
Whether or not that is all that has been done to this I can not say, I'm not an agate expert.

It is gorgeous whether it was treated or not. It does look like some treated that was posted here a while back. They told how it was done too but I do not have a clue how to find the post. Jim

LOL! We'll have you out rockhounding with a pick and a helmet by the end of the summer, just wait! It is addictive because it's incredibly fun! As far as the stone goes, I have no clue on treating. It looks kind of like what has been selling as "sardonyx" though. Interesting stone and great pattern! I also really like the asymmetry in the wrap. You did a great job with it!

Great thread! Answered all my questions. I would never have remembered it. I thought it was related to what they do with matrix opals to blacken it. I met a guy a long time ago who was doing it with opals and kept saying he was cooking them. Now I know why.

LOL Randy, you got one up on me, can't even remember what I ate for breakfast anymore...LOL Great wrap and cool stone. I like the patterns in it. I'm not one for treated or dyed stones either but sometimes they look good.
