I am considering trying this hobby. Right now I live in a ranch style house, alone, but will likely have to soon move to a small apartment. Would noise be a problem? Anything else a pre-beginner should consider?

As far as noise goes you might be able to live with putting your tumbler in a closet with the door closed. I would suggest starting out with a small tumbler in your case to minimize the noise. Also be sure to set your tumbler in a tray of some kind in case of leakage. Another thing to consider is where you will be cleaning your stones and equipment between stages. You should never pour your contents in the sink. It will set up like concrete in your drain. ( Apartment managers don't like that). Taking it out side and using a garden hose would be preferable. Good luck!

Put the tumbler on a towel and sound proof a spare closet. That should do the trick.

I have a LORTONE 3A on top of my Refrigerator. I only here it if I am right there. It works great for me.

I live in a 36' 5th wheel travel trailer and have 3 rotary tumblers going 24/7. Sometimes I get up and go make sure they are still tumbling because I don't even hear them anymore.
The vibrating tumbler I just got is a whole 'nother story.

Do not get the hobby toy tumbler it is really noise compared to the Lortone 3A tumbler I got. It is only 30.00 more for that over the toy.

Yes the Lortone 3A is a very good little tumbler. I love mine and can hardly here it run.

I have a Tumble-Vibe and it's pretty noisy. I first tried to put it in the kitchen (with all the other small appliances) but my husband could't take it. So I put it in the spare bedroom. The cat got neurotic (he loves that room) so now it's in the basement. If you have that option, that's the way to go. It's not like we rock hounds will forget it's there ;D

bshultz (or anyone): I read somewhere that you should not put a tumbler in a closet, because it needs ventilation for the cooling fans. Any comment on this?

I don't see any problem with running a tumbler in a closet, but if the closet is carpeted or there are thing laying on the floor I would put the unit in a pan of some sort just in case you get a big leak. The clean up will be much easier. Bob
