Hi All! I figure I have to introduce myself and start posting some time, because I have a LOT of questions! I appreciate everybody's patience in advance, as I call things by the wrong name and sound like a . . . well, newbie! I'm from Culver City, and have lots of energy and enthusiasm but zero (and I really mean ZERO) rock hound friends, so will be looking to get infrom from you all. I will be joining the Culver City rock club though, and going on field trips where I can, so that should help. I got a tumbler, and a load of jasper (etc) from Gem Hill, so the tumbler is turning and I'm excited (I already want another tumbler -- 2 barrels is just NOT enough!). See? I already have the bug! So, Hi!

Welcome aboard Bluesky. We have a bunch of California folks on here who will be more than happy to help you get started. I'm a former Riverside guy myself, now living in South Dakota.
Bring on the questions. We don't mind. If we don't have an answer, we'll find one for you.
Don

Just watch for rattle snakes during warm weather. They're few and far between, but they sure get your attention when one starts to buzz near you.

We have them in S.D. too. I always wear heavy boots and snake gaiters.

Huh, snake gaters are new to me, learn something (or lots of things) every day! Looks like an excellent idea.

Snake gaiters are made out of a material that a snakes fangs can't penetrate. The gaiters come up to the knee. They also make snake chaps that come all the way to the hips. I'll post a link to the place I got mine as soon as I find it, so you can see what I'm talking about.

Cool. They probably also help keep the stickers out of your socks! Have you ever . . . um . . . been glad you were wearing them?

Here you go. www.forestry-suppliers.com/search.asp?stext=Snake%20GaitersI've never been sorry that I was wearing them. The only encounters I've had with rattlers were before I bought my gaiters. Another thing to remember. Never step or reach into places where you can't see. I carry a 6' walking staff, and if I'm in heavy brush, I poke the brush a good distance around me. The only drawback to wearing gaiters is, they're hot to wear in hot weather.

Yep, sounds like you definitely have the bug!! It all started for me when my wife bought me one of those little cheapy tumblers from Michael's. From the first finished barrel I was off and running. It evolved to a garage full of saws, machines and slabs and a yard full of rock. It is a good bug to have though. Welcome

Welcome to the forum! My elder son and I were up in Gem Hill a few months back - great location, isn't it? We're down in Costa Mesa and have relatives over in Culver City. There's a bunch of us in SoCal; maybe with Summer approaching we can get a field trip together. This has been the best forum I've ever joined - the folks here are so helpful and gracious - I've learned and am learning, a lot! Good to meet you! Paul

Welcome to the forum! We are in Newberry Springs near lots of good rock spots. We will be at the Yucaipa show this month. They have the best silent auction for rocks I've seen. Worth the hour or so trip for you.

There are 4 Gem Trail books on SoCal which list all the rocks locally available to you. The Mojave Desert is covered with all kinds of good stuff.
