I am sitting in the dr office waiting for my physician. 2 weekends ago I was rock hounding in Wyoming and hit a large rock to chip off a bit and see what it was. Something hit me hard in the abdomen. I lifted my 3 layers of shirts and there was a jagged cut. It healed over pretty fast and last week I noticed a bump under the skin by the cut. I looked at my shirts and saw if there were any holes in what I was wearing and couldn't find anything. I went to the doc just to be sure and he said to give it a week and see how it looked. Last week I opened the bag of hand made jewelry from Jo and three necklace for me was clasped with magnets. After wearing it a day something prompted to see if it stuck to the bump on my side and it did. I'm going to see if I can keep the piece once they remove it, but here is the hammer head to get some idea of what may be there I'll post an update once the doc is done

Ask for a copy of the XRAY if they do one and post it. They are usually electronic now. I bet it looks cool. I occasionally come across XRAYS that show old bullet fragments, shotgun pellets etc. I don't think I've ever seen a hammer shard but who knows. Some people tell me they don't remember being shot. Kinda hard to believe Good luck Bill

What brand is the hammer? Good luck with it. I guess we are all pretty careless until something goes wrong. Once up in the Jade Cove area my wife was going to smack a piece of serpentine to see if it was jade (they look pretty much the same when wet). Hammer hit rock, sand flew into her eye. Eyes heal fast but it ruined her whole day. I've been nicked by many rock flakes flying off rocks I've chipped.

New hammers seem to be the worst about chipping. It`s a good thing you were layered up with shirts. It might have been bad.

Lucky it didn't go further south. I would hate to also wear a cup along with my safety glasses while rock hounding. Glad you are ok with no infection.

Lucky it didn't go further south. Oh my gosh, you're right! John, I'm so glad you figured it out before you went on your trip. That's an amazing story. I guess with good tools, shtuff still happens. No holes in your shirts? That's nuts. Glad you are in good shape and healing nicely. Jo

Wow! When I see that and think of how careless I am with my Estwing it freaks the crap out of me! I knew these things could put out an eye but I had no idea the shrapnel could be THAT hazardous - through all that clothing and then right through skin... wow wow wow!!! Thanks for posting - I'm scared straight now!

I believe Estwing has a great warranty. I would contact the supplier and try to get a new hammer out of it. If not through the supplier, contact Estwing and tell them your story including medical care costs.

Glad to hear that you weren't too badly hurt. We're absolutely nuts about our tools, and still have fun with them flying apart!
Case in point, we lent out a "buster bar" on our last Davis Creek trip, and it came back after the end cap of the hammer collar was punched out! The "puncher" was one surprised rockhound!
I'm going to go out and get a full face shield tomorrow, for slabbing obsidian. We do all our slabbing by hand, and have had too many close calls lately. No more putting it off.
Best regards, Kris Hand-2-Mouth Mining
