This is a project I've been meaning to do for a long time. My shop is called Gnomes and Nuggets, mainly because at the time, before we sold the house and hit the road, I was making gnome houses from natural materials from the woods where we lived. Bill came up with the name. Since I've been working mostly with the nuggets now, people always ask, "where are the gnomes" and then the explanation went into something like, well, we are the traveling gnomes hauling around all these nuggets, bla, bla, bla, LOL. Anywho, I've been wanting to pull the gnomes and nuggets thing together for a while now, so here it is... the birth of a gnome. Wire armature with sculpey body, fired so the outer clay has something to grab onto. I know, it looks scary. Gave him some pants and boots so he won't be nekked anymore. Now for his coat/tunic/whatever. I actually had to build the eyes, I know you can buy them, but you know me, I gotta do it the hard way. He was blind but now he can see... Eyebrows and rosy cheeks. Now for some manscaping. After some hair, it looked like he needed an ark and a bunch of pairs of animals. At this point he was human enough to sit next to Billy and give him poker advice. And now all he needs is his hat. This is the taller version of the hat. I ended up shortening it for fear it might snap off. Oops, can't forget his belt. Here he is all done. For the nugget part, he's holding a faceted glass stone that Billy made last year. Thanks for looking. Jo

Hahaha... well, in his former life he used to be a monk. I want to get better at the faces, and make them less scary and more expressive.

Manscaping ? Don't let my wife see that term! ROFLOL Lovely creation, and very well detailed. Love the outcome. So, can we now expect a few more gnomes, presenting your cabs and wraps in the future?

Very possible. I think the key to a better face will be to set the eyes deeper at the beginning so I can get the shape I want and then be able to achieve the facial expressions I'm looking for.

Jo that was a great presentation and I just love the expression on his face. The whole presentation made me think of an animated cartoon. Very amusing I am going to look at it again. Just love it Stu

Hi Jo, What kind of clay do you use to make these gnomes? Do they have to be baked in a kiln? Stu

Stu, It's polymer clay. There are several brands, which can be mixed. These are Sculpey and Kato mixed. No kiln needed, they can be baked in an oven. That's why I chose it, no room for more equipment, LOL.
