I made an awesome deal with Dan (fish) for some thulite and he went way beyond necessary with the thulite and then he threw in several other stones. He is not a man of many words but he really proved himself with his actions. Thanks a bunch Dan. Here are the two test rings that I made and that stone is gorgeous. It looks much better in the rings than it did as a slab. Same sun but two different shades of color. The second photo is closest to the right color. Jim

That is nice material and you did a great job making the rings. What size saws do you use? I know every size is different , or do you cut them aout then grind to fit? lloyd

Great job Jim! That variety of thulite looks much more like the Wyoming pink jade type thulite than it does the Sierra foothill stuff....Mel

Thanks all. Mel - I have not seen any Wyoming pink but now that you told me that there is such a thing I will be hunting for some. its - I have a tut for making the rings in the creations section. The slab is put in a drill press vice then the vice is clamped down so nothing can move. I use a hole saw the size that I want to make the ring (most are 11/16 -size 8) to make the first hole. Then I use a hole saw that will leave about 1/8" around the first hole and that is my ring blank. I spin the ring in the drill press which you will see in the photos in the tut. Here is the thread. forum.rocktumblinghobby.com/index.cgi?board=creationtime&action=display&thread=50851Jim

I was there when Dan dug and picked that stuff from the earth.
I have a pile too. I cannot wait until I get to start working it. Nice rings Jim!

Shotgunner, You should really like working this stone. It is very similar to nephrite in how it works and polishes. 3000 diamond pad puts on a really good shine. Not like agate but still has good depth. I am going to try 5000 hand sand paper to see if it will pop a little more but I do not think that it can be improved on and the luster type of shine looks really good on the rings. Jim

Jim, thanks for the great tips. Unfortunately I have more rocks than sense (or time to work them). I have some other stuff I must work with before I get to the "thulite".

hahaha I know what you mean. I reduced my "to do next" pile to nothing a couple of weeks ago and it is bigger now than it was before. Cutting small stones on my trim saw is so loud that I have to wear ear plugs and it throws so many chips that I have to wear a face mask so I let things pile up until there is no more room to stack rocks.
Smoking is banned on all BLM land here so I will not be picking up any rocks for a while. lol It is so dry that I am afraid to drop a rock because I might cause a spark and using my hammer is totally a no no. There is no way that I am going to run out of rocks behind my house so the rest of them are just going to have to wait for me to pick them up. Jim

Jim, those really are fantastic rings. I've had a few customers express interest in stone rings, could I refer them to you?

picked up a nice peice of thulite from the local rock club today and it comes from up the valley from Vancouver BC. while looking for the supplier site I found out BC has another bug deposite up near Kitimat in west central BC that I didn't know about either that was found in 2008.
