I don't know much at all about fossils. When I picked this up a month or so ago hounding in WY, I just thought it was some botryoidal material of some sort. I was just going through the load I hounded, though, and when I turned it over it appeared to have a round "core" with some sort of material growing outward (in my mind this could be the center of the coral growing outward) What do you think?

It looks like some coral I have. If you cut it, it will have a red center. Cool stuf/

Good to see you are back safe and sound. I have not found anything like that up here. It looks like what you have is half of something. Chert nodules form in some strange ways but I have not seen any with that much botroidal (sp) bumps on the outside.
There is a lot of coral in Wyoming and that could very well be one. Not all coral has the little wheel shapes in them. Just about anything found in the ocean can be found in one form or another in Wyoming because almost the entire state was under water at one time. I find the same things at 9000 feet as I find at 5000 feet. Too bad we can not go back and take a photo of what it looked like here when the uplift was going on.
Sorry I am not more help. Jim

Looks like they need to be soaked in some limeaway and then they will look like real cauliflower, LOL. Welcome back! Jo

Thanks all, yes the trip was great and we had a lot of fun.
I'll see if I can get the red dirt off.
It's good to be home.

Datolite looks like cauliflower, but I don't think it's found in Wyoming.
