been at a large piece of Polka Dot Jasper all week and thought I'd show where things stand. There is some interesting stuff happening, but not a lot so far. There is a much larger piece remaining to be slabbed, hopefully there are more interesting things there!

not so bad
did you know white polka dot is one of the recommended agates for growing copper dendrites?

Hmm, I recall seeing a post about that around here, can't recall the specifics. There are enough large white area that it could be something to try.
Any pointers?

Good read, I need to track down the chemicals but that could be fun. Yeah I'd love to see a pic of the polka dot.

Nice rock there. Until now I wondered what people saw in polka-dot -- apparently I've only seen pictures of not-so-nice pieces before this. Very cool!

Wow just the white is all billowy like clouds, then the colors are amazing - never seen that with the white in agate before (not like this - I have seen lace formations but this is different). Still those slabs look pretty darn cool to me!

I see similar billowy white inside coconut geodes, but yeah I really like it.
This stuff I slabbed in the op is very solid and opaque, not like the one in the link.

Oh man, don't get me started on Geodes - those things are like little miracles tucked away in an earth sized box of cracker jacks just waiting for someone to find the prize, lol... (see!) I don't know a lot about them but have several cheapies that are stunning and that I'd love to carve or cut in some way slightly unusual. The agate formations in them can be so mind boggling.

I posted a pic at one point, but the coconut geodes are solid and not hollow. I need to cab a piece, I had forgotten that my dad wanted one cabbed for a bolo.

Good read, I need to track down the chemicals but that could be fun. Yeah I'd love to see a pic of the polka dot. Here are two cabs Fischer shows on plate#9 of his book. They are copper grown in polkadot I think it is cheaper and just as good to make Copper Chloride solution by adding table salt to a solution of RootKill (copper sulfate). I made some and it look the right color, but I have not tested it yet.

in some of the newer polkadot, the blue gets stronger and more translucent. sometimes not so many gold dots. this is often called blue ice polkadot. It looks like your cab was more from that type. The original polkadot (and still a lot of what is mined) is opaque white with the gold dots.

cool Thanks for posting Daniel.
I think mine is the older variety. Gold dots, not the blue ice (which I picked a piece out of the traveling rock box a few weeks back and is different than what I am cutting)

John, the piece you picked out of the traveling rock box was one of the pieces Roy slabbed for me. I tried slabbing the rest of the brick yesterday with my new saw.... gosh darn HARD stuff!!! I've set it aside to play with some softer stuff first. I'm not sure where it's dug at..... thinking Woody said OR but not 100% sure.
Do you know where yours came from?
Btw, I think they look cool and full of promise!

it is from central oregon. some years the filed trip at the Prineville pow-wow goes there, and the Salem club went some years back. I think westcoastgems on ebay is connected to the mining operation. I had about 100lbs. ( s207.photobucket.com/albums/bb114/deb193/rough/polkadot/) offered some here at RTH in 2008. still got about 45lbs. mostly holding on to it. one of my favorite cabs: can't figure out the right bail. one of my favorite preforms: one of my favorite slabs:

oh got it, the other cab - that was from a slab from Ralph and Mary Ann, sorry I misunderstood.
Yeah that could be the case.

Thanks Krystee, we'll see how it cabs! I am excited about the blue ice piece from the travelling box, that is really cool.
