Okay, progress has slowed significantly on the room but we did manage to accomplish some stuff today. First, at manofglass's strong suggestion, we installed an airconditioner that we weren't using to cool it down up there a bit. This was quite a bit more entailed than would be expected as this wall is where I was piling everything that is going. The little drawer thingies were in the bottom of Tom's desk and are now much more accessible! Then, I had to find a place to put the radio/cd player/record player because I have to have my tunes! The desk thingie between the two is piled high with directions et al and is actually my drawing table ...which now that I can get to the file cabinet will be cleared so that I can use it for design work. Perhaps the hardest thing about this whole process is that this room is where I have been storing a lot of the stuff from my parents. Doing all of this is forcing me to go through all of it ...again, and figure out what fits in my life and what doesn't. Some stuff, like my dad's hand tools, I haven't really gotten into at this point and may need some help from all of you in identifying some of it. Also, and I will be posting about this later on the swap thread...although I don't really want to swap, I just want to find a good home for it, my mom loved to paint with watercolors. I have a ton of her tube watercolors that I really don't see ever being able to use. If anyone is interested, please pm me. I just can't throw this stuff away! I also have some good paper...really good paper! Now for tonights view. Very muggy and hot today so the air is really heavy! Cathy

What a lovely place this will be to hang out! If it is the attic, you will be very glad you have the air conditioner!

Such a kewl space!!!
Something I noticed... the flooring there... I've seen that color flooring in homes from Upstate NY to Arlington Virginia to Pensacola to Orlando. Usually in older homes built in the 1920s.... wonder if that's what happens over decades to a white floor, or that was THE MOST POPULAR color on the planet 30 years ago for wood floors....

Adding the A/C is a great idea. Your workshop is really coming together!

You know me but I have to ask. Do you use that thingie on top of the file cabinet to smooth the wrinkles in the stone or is there another reason for it being IN A ROCK SHOP? That is about like putting your tooth brush in the living room. And I have a bone to pick with you. You have been posting all this organizing and getting all fancy and stuff so what happens. I had to drive 2 1/2 hours to a doctor appointment and guess what is in that town? Yea, right, Home Depot which I can usually stay away from because it is 2 1/2 hours away. All this organizing crap has me thinking that my shop looks like hell and I had better keep up with the talkingstoneses. Well that and the fact that I had rocks dribbling off the table because my "I have to do these next" rocks were numbering into the hundreds. To top it off my be conservative mind tells me to get the small bins. Yea, right!!!!!! 16 of those little bins just did not cut it so I just ended up dumping a bunch of it in a bucket and kicked it into the corner. I really had to make more room for all of the "I have to do these next" rocks that crawl out of the woodwork every night when I sleep. Where in the hell do they all come from. Does anyone know? I need to have a "I have to do these next rocks" sale. I could probably be rich in a couple of months. Any way, all's well that ends well. I found a container of about 40 finished cabs that I had forgotten I had just sitting there waiting to be drilled, wrapped or bailed. So, thanks a bunch. I really needed those cabs before I headed to market. Jim

Ah, Jim! That's what I forgot, a cup to hold tooth brushes for up there! LOL! The thing on the file cabinet is to utilize with the fabric backgrounds for taking pictures of the rocks. I photograph up there quite a bit too. The center for that is now on the wrapping side counters opposite the machine counter...that only has the Lortone right now but will be growing quite soon.
There are a couple of reasons I'm doing all of this. First, I've been ill for a while now and got through some minor surgery last week that I was really scared about having. I've been thinking about doing this for a long time and decided that if I made it through the anesthesia, it was happening.
I lived.
I also have a real thing about being able to work independently. I've been very dependent upon the workshop for my rock club which is about an hour and a half away and is open twice a month. This and the health stuff has really limited my ability to produce the pieces I want to on a consistent basis. I've been able to work things up to a certain point, but then have had to do the finishing work down there because of the machines, which depending upon the crowd that shows up, may or may not be available.
The reason I'm posting all of it is because the nature of a workshop is to be a mess...especially rock workshops. I thought that if I'm doing this anyway, might as well post it as folks might get some ideas for their own work spaces or have suggestions, like the air conditioner, that I hadn't thought of but would make the work easier. Being the conservative minded rugged indvidualist that I am, I personally think that Home Depot is one of the last shining beacons of the spirit that built America and everyone should spend more time there...but I'm not going back till after Labor Day! LOL! I'm really proud of you for doing so, not to keep up with me, but to keep up with your rocks! (They really do crawl at night!)
I'm glad you found your cabs! :-) My "rocks" are actually going in medium frb's on the shelves. The little drawer thingies are for cabs and slabs that I'm working...or am gonna get to sooner than later. The drawers prevent breakage and loss amongst all of the other stuff. Those I already had but couldn't really get to as they were under the Lortone on Tom's desk.
Anyway, I'm proud of you for keeping the innovative, self-reliant, American Spirit alive and visiting Home Depot! If I accomplish nothing else in this lifetime than to inspire others into believing they can do for themselves, that's a lot! One of the favorite quotes I live by is "Whether you think you can or you can't, you're right!" -Thomas Eddison If my little-old gray-haired-mechanically-challenged-free-travel-impaired-self can do this, others can too.
Dreams are non-tangible. Realities are where we actually live. Somewhere between, if work is involved, the two can meet. Hey, I'm not just redoing a workshop... I'm building MY "Etsy Empire" here with MY own money and MY own sweat, so this is serious stuff! In the world we live in today, I am my best investment. I really hope that by posting all of this, other people start believing that, not about me, but about themselves! :-) You found your cabs, so it must be working!
God Bless America! :-)
I really need a "Hell Yeah!" from Randy right about here...LOL!

How about a "DAMN RIGHT" from Jim. lol I hate to be a copy cat.
I have really enjoyed your post and I try to see humor in "almost" everything. "Laughter is the best medicine" (by whats his name) I hope you have gained a lot by the surgery (I have had many) and your positive attitude is very inspiring. I will be looking forward to your next installment. When does your grand child arrive, I have forgotten? Jim

LOL! A "DAMN RIGHT" does well! The grand kids arrive (hopefully) on August 2. My son is still awaiting leave approval. If he doesn't get it, I may just have to go down to VA Beach for that first weekend and see if I can find some rocks. No work on the room tonight as it was a tough day. I'm going to regret that tomorrow as the first of the equipment is due to arrive.... and I've got a ton of stuff to get out of there before that happens although the thing on the file cabinet is not one of them!) Enjoy the night!
