Well, at the lapidary shop, there are 2 14 inch saws. One is a Covington where thr blade is fixed and the trolley moves and which cuts very well, but slow. The other is a Lortone drop saw that cuts rings around the Covington. I can cut 5 or 6 slabs in the time it takes the other to do just one. It's loud, messy, sprays oil (I built a box to go over it to contain the mist and sprays, works like a charm). Oh... did I mention it's loud? That HF saw isn't a drop saw.....but set up properly, you could cut rocks for sure. Phil

Hi Phil.........I have a 16" swing arm saw that I just built (same principle as the Lortone drop saw but in reverse) that you can see in the "slabs and saws" section. It will cut rock as fast as you want if you can afford new blades every day lol. I keep mine running a little slow im not selling slabs and it's not like I can cut 500 cabs a day. It was from the plans on Ebay, which haven't been sold for awhile now, and I found issues with the plans. So I basically modified certain things and here it is. It's a rather 'manual' saw, I just wanted something I could build fast and cheap and it meets that criteria.

Thanks. I think I'll keep looking for a drop saw or plans for one like the Lortone.
