OMG! I thought I would never get this done. I had to do one first to work out the details because I have never done anything like this before. This was a size 16 custom job. The turquoise is 2.08 inches by 1.35" and is 122 ct or 24 g. I used a 1/2 ounce of copper. This goes with the pendant that I did for the same man. It's in the tumbler now and then I will give it a patina. I sent the pics of the first one to my client and he loved it. This one came out waaaay nicer, too. ;D I'm super stoked and couldn't wait to show it off (unabashedly so). Took about 4 hours to do. I took my time to get it perfect in every way. The last picture is the prototype on my husband's hand. He has a large hand and this swims on him. But, it is comfortable, the turquoise is secure and he can bend his fingers freely. This makes me want to make more.

I don't come here to hawk my tutorials but this is one that I have a tute for. I had to modify it a little because of the size. Because it takes so long to develop a design, I don't usually post how things are made. I hope that doesn't make me an a**hole, but I am a working artist. I left the site where I hawked my tutes because I don't like to do it and didn't like the site. I'd rather share in the fun of rocks and wire wrapping here.
I don't sell a whole lot of tutes and have been slow to drop my prices in my blog store. I had to have a certain price because I was selling at JL and they took half the proceeds and I had to agree not to sell for less anywhere else while I was there. If anyone is interested in a tute, PM me and I will send you a code for half off because I don't have the time or inclination right now to change the blog store. I'm seriously considering taking them all down and just releasing How To's on technique versus whole designs.

It may be the biggest ring you ever made - but it is also the biggest ring I've ever seen The braiding you did is incredible. Is you client an NFL lineman? Great job Bill

Nope not a linebacker, but close to it. Frog -- I'm not insinuating that you or anyone else would copy anything. I just don't post the backs. I am (or was) selling tutes. Why would I give something away that I am asking people to pay for? I'm not accusing anyone of anything. It's business. But, I'm not here on business. If you still want a picture, PM me your addy and I'll email one to you. I bet you've done the same platform a hundred times.

That looks great. Thanks for showing it off. I'm not much for patina but on this ring it looks great.

I am curious, you said it was in the tumbler - is that something to do with the patina, I've never considered tumbling something once it is wrapped...
just curious.

Thanks I'm really happy with how this came out. Tumbling- I used to tumble everything, now just some things. I did this one because it is a ring, I wanted to make sure there were no unseen, overlooked burrs. I wanted to clean it real good before the patina, too. Sometimes, it's just easier to throw it in the tumbler for a few hours.

So you are the only person I have seen (so far) apply a patina. Is there some product for this or is this a "secret of the ages?"

LOL! No, secret. It's stuff called liver of sulfur. You can get the kind that comes in rock form, but I prefer it in the gel form. I picked up the gel on ebay. Simple as all hell to use- put clean copper or silver in hot water to warm it up, stir in the tiniest bit of LOS and - done! Of, course it will be black (silver goes gray). You'll have to rub off the high spots with 0000 steel wool and follow with a polish.

Cool, thanks for the info. So it doesn't affect the stone at all? I mean clearly the stone here looks unscathed, just curious if that is a consideration at all.

I have heard once before that someone had a problem, but I can't remember which kind of stone it was. It was probably a strong copper or silver bearing stone. I have done dozens of kinds and have never had a problem. It's basically sulfur. You can do the same thing with a boiled egg. Google boiled egg patina and try it. I've done it. It works. The LOS just works MUCH better and faster.

herchenx: RioGrande.com also sells Black Magic. Apply with rag, Q-tip or small brush. Wipe off.
