OK, so I am looking to do some cabbing in the house. I would like something quiet and clean. Spraying water everywhere is not an option. I have some rock equipment and am looking to do this cheap, because I've got a new mouth to feed. Here are my options. Whatday think? 1. I got 3/4 of a Genie that will take $300 to get to its former glory. Not counting $150 in wheel resurfacing. 2. Big ol highland park machine in great shape. Put 6" wheels in in instead of 8 inch. Same wheel resurfacing. 3. Buy a compact used machine like a cab-mate or something small. Whatever it is gets mounted to a sturdy cart so I can wheel is out of the way. What do all you in-house cabbers think? Steve

Depends, both the Genie and the HP are kinda large would you have to move it often? For the cost of a new cabmate you coud fix up the Genie and get a used trim saw and have 10x the equipment of an all-in-one unit that will drive you nuts having to change out crap all the time. Also more convenient water setup on the genie. Why would you put 6" wheels on the HP? Cost reasons? Sell the HP and use that $ to fix up the genie. And curiously what is missing on the Genie? If it's just shrouds you may be able to build them for little or nothing.

Good one. Yeah, the Genie is more compact. It's got the hoods and such. Its missing a pan, some of the pump guts and most importantly, the pricey wheel adapters. I gotta say, if I had to choose between a Genie and a HP, gotta go with the HP. Heavy duty, all metal, and reliable, sounds like a tank when you bang on it and just about heavy as one. I'll take make-em-like-they-used-to over fancy any day. Explains why I never got the Genie going after all these years. I picked up a metal table today as well that would fit it nicely. OK, maybe its time to sell the Genie to pay for wheels for the HP.
BTW, the reason for putting 6" wheels on an 8" machine was cost. I have a set that I can get resurfaced. As long as we are buying diapers and baby stuff, there's no way I'm going to spend $500+ on new wheels. Steve

With overhead water the HP would be awful messy in the house. The Genie is pretty mess free. You can buy aquarium air pumps cheaper than the stock Genie pump unless it just needs leathers and a belt. The pan isn't real expensive either. Or sell it and buy an Ameritool. Very good candidate for in the house, very portable.
