Whilst digging obsidian, I found both of these in the same hole. The biface was about two feet down in the top soil layer, whilst the blade core was about four feet down in the clay. The biface is in the region of 1 to 2 thousand year old, the blade core tens of thousands years old. The core is what was left from driving blades off a prepared block of obsidian. You can see the biface shows very little weathering whilst the blade core is surface etched from the many years it has lain there. Woody Both together The biface The blade core By comparison, one by me.

Great finds Woody. I occasional find flint trade blanks around the ranch that are shaped very much like that biface you found. Some of them are almost a foot long. Guess they reduced the weight by percussion flaking and then used the big blanks to transport or maybe trade. In some areas of the ranch it looks like they really had a factory going....Mel

Mel:
The big bifaces were the normal form lithic materials were transported, and traded. I think I would do the same thing if I were to load a pack up, and walk a couple of hundred miles....only since, I know it was done, otherwise, I would probably have humped a few loads of boulders before figuring it out.
