It's petrified coral. See if you can scratch it with a pocket knife. If it won't scratch, it can be cleaned with swimming pool acid. If it will scratch, try soaking it for a day or two in bleach and water. Then scrub with a soft brush. Another option would be soaking it in Super Iron Out. If you use acid or Iron Out, soak it for at least 36 hours afterwards to remove the chemicals.

Yes it does scratch. Just wanna clean it up so u can see it better. There is a piece on the back of the rock that may be a sponge, but there it is barely visible due to the material its in. Thanks guys.

If you can scratch it, Don't use acid. Use bleach water mix. Mix heavy on the bleach. Hot water, and let it soak for at least 24 hours. Wash it off with dish detergent and a soft brush. To get it really clean, you may have to repeat the process a couple times.

Oxalic acid will destroy many softer materials, and some hard ones too. Oxalic acid can be mild. Depends on how you mix it. Right now I have some Fairburn agates sitting in a bucket of oxalic. Mixed 2 cups of oxalic acid crystals to 1 gallon of water. You wouldn't want to put your bare hands in it.
