have you posted these before? they look real familiar. pretty cool colors you get after they've been cooked.

Really nice material, James. Why are you heat treating the coral? The second cab looks like a smiley face to me and has some awesome coral in it. Haven't cabbed any coral before and hope someone offers to cab some of your material.

The cooking changes the color Jan.I am learning the process and have it figured out.The secret was my wife's convection oven.Pack your coral in sand in a cake dish and raise temp 50-80 degrees every hour till you hit 550/600 and leave it there for 3-4 hours.Turn off oven and let it cool(about 6-8 hours).Good winter project for keeping the house warm.Indians did this to make the coral more workable when making arrowheads-perhaps for color too...You never know what color you will end up with.

Only about 25 percent of that coral changes. To avoid wasting energy,i heated sample chips off of 25-30 larger chunks, then matched the chips back to the large pieces. The rind is where the color action is both before or after heat treatment. This is all new to me.

I just learned a whole lot more from jcinpc Helen. His material looks exactly like the Zephyr Hills stuff. The only pieces i found of that quality were small corals about 3-6 inches.Never found large pieces that had such pretty centers as jcinpc.

Hi, James! Does your wife still use her convection oven? ;D Interesting that you have cooked them in it. Just for fun...a video of some dudes making "diamonds" from charcoal using peanut butter and a microwave.
