I would like to pass this along so that maybe it will help someone. I was cutting out a template the other day and not haveing much luck getting some of it right. The knife wasn't quite what I needed. I thought for awhile and it dawned on me. In the past I had done some leather work, making belts, billfolds, etc. any way it occured to me that the swivle knife would be just the thing. It is used in leather work to cut out the pattern before the tooling takes place. Anyway it is a knife blade in a swivel barrel with a thumb place holder. It can swivel in any direction. This is a link to one so you can see what one looks like.
Just thought I'd pass it along.
Hope this helps someone, Charles

Charles - just seeing if the link is something you can fix? I know this is a longshot to save a very old thread but the link is dead and I'll have to move it out of the tutorials section.

An alternative way to cut out templates is with a jeweler's saw. It works well with plastic or metal and is extremely accurate. Just pierce a hole and thread the saw blade through. I like 4/0 for accuracy. With a little practice anyone can follow a pencil line and leave graphite visible on both sides of the cut. I struggled with knives to get matching radius and this method solved my woes!

I should have mentioned that you will require a bench pin or something similar to support the flimsy template material while cutting.

Tommy - here's a link to photos of swivel knives. Pretty cool looking tool! Thanks Robin. To be honest I didn't realize it was just a link to a knife - I thought it was a link to a tutorial showing him actually cutting out a template.

Thanks Robin. To be honest I didn't realize it was just a link to a knife - I thought it was a link to a tutorial showing him actually cutting out a template. There are a mess of videos on YouTube that show how to use them. Very true - I was just doing that lol. I didn't even know what a swivel knife was until just now.
