I can't remember the name of this. Can someone remind me? I do remember my teacher had little interest. He didn't know or care why it has a shell inside of it. Attachments:

Baculites are pretty cool,I have hundreds of them from the Montana area....Some are mud(better for just display),but alot of them are so cool, when cut length wise to show the inner cores! They are about 175,000,000 years old, give or take a few 100,000 years........ ;D ;D

I have a section of that. It's been polished. Beautiful gold sutures between brown sections.

Okay very cool info all and Fossilman always a wealth of information and helpful much thanks! The date helps me identify approximate age of other mother of peril clad fossils found in the same layer of shale. It was when I was a kid the river/chem. waste dump. Behind my "hood" reviled this wonderful trove of fossils. Something I had never seen all the years I had walked the area. I had piles of stuff and still have a good amount.. I'll post more pics when my computer is fixed. The outside of it has a thin but nice shell still. Oh and the spot where I see a fossil shell under its shell, was that a meal it consumed? I need to get me a saw now! Very cool to know....

Woh! You weren't kidding those are cool , damn now I want to go find more I only got the one good one and the front bit of another that is pretty rough... I think fossils were what got me started hounding when I was a little boy I have always loved them. I've even tried to think of how to ensure that I become a fossil someday ..

If you also notice on the slices, not one of them are the same inside and I have seen 1000's of baculites cut and all have a different surprise inside! My Uncle had one that was yellow on the outside, with white sutures and hollowed inside with small crystals on the interior walls!

haha I'm a droolmen most times .. I wonder fossilman? If I got a side view of mine could you give a probability of braking if sawed.. The material seems pretty solid ,more so than the shale I found the shells and a few poorly fossilized wood chunks mixed in with the mother o peril right by it. It had came lose from somewhere close but I never figured where.

If it looks like it would fracture, just add rock glue to the break on the baculite than slice it...I have a few I've done that to.....A few baculites are just mud with the outer formation of the fossil, you will tell when its cut,it will be just a dull muddy color!
