Hey all.
I've been perusing this forum for probably around two years. I've been a member since Oct of last year. It's taken me way too long to step out of my comfort zone and get off the sidelines and actually talk to you people, heh. ;-)
I never cared about rocks much (I know, blasphemy... ) until my girlfriend got me looking into lapidary, and I dove in headfirst, heh.
I used to do some woodworking, mainly building musical instruments. I still do, but haven't had much time recently.
I've always been the first one to volunteer for just about any project, build, fix, mod, or whatever, or whatever kind.
Projects may not keep me completely sane, but they hit closer to the mark than most...
I know a little bit about general mechanical stuff, electrical, electronics, woodworking, and how to play around with something until I magically figure something out, heh. I've just about always had less money than time, or more money but no time to spend it, and end up finding interesting ways of managing to do the things I need to do.
I'm 29, disabled, and spend most all of my available time in my shop space trying to get myself in trouble, and most of my money making that possible.
My girlfriend and I currently have a 10" FranTom slabber I just finished fixing up, a 10" FranTom combo machine I finally convinced her to let me pass on, an Ameritool 8" lap polisher, and an unknown 6" angled lap polisher.
I also have a rotary tumbler, a vibratory lap, and another 10" slabber that all need some work and are getting it, when I can find or mangle together parts.
I just traded a Covington 10" combo unit to a nice local lady looking to get into the hobby. That machine was almost unrecognizeable when I got it!
I recently sold/swapped a B&I Gem Maker and 10" Star Diamond slabber to my mother to get her into the hobby. She's been helping me in my shop lately, and boy have things been going quicker! Lads and ladies of lapidary-let your mothers help! Heh.
I plan to build a sphere machine sometime long in the future when I actually have that much extra money. I just finished (rough draft) Sketchup plans for an 18" drop saw I'd like to build (out of wood. I still don't know much about working with metal). Just gotta transfer the plans into AutoCAD, print, and be off, heh.
I've got a few other odds and ends I'd like to make myself, either because it's less expensive, or just because it's fun as all get out.
Anyway, this is me sayin' hello.
If anyone is near or comes through Chico, CA feel free to shoot me an e-mail and stop by. I'd be happy to share some obsidian, jasper, or serpentine with ya, if nothing else, heh.
