I am brand new to this board. I have visited several times in the past but I am now getting interested in agates and you folks seem to have lots of info. I teach middle school science in North Carolina and have been collecting minerals for over 25 years but never have tried my hand at any lapidary art.
I do have one question. I have seen lots of small beautiful tumbled agates on the board. Here is the dumb question. What do you do with them? Wrap them or display or ?

Welcome from Arkansas, Dan!
I mostly give my tumbles away to kids or anyone else that wants them....otherwise they go into a big jar.

Welcome Aboard!! My tumbles get mostly given out. I started saving certain ones for jewelry making. Going to be a blast!

We pre-shape and tumble some for jewelry, and some of the nicer generic tumble becomes key chain fobs, but most goes to kids.

I have a 40lb and two 10lb tumblers running 24/7. I end up with about 300 lbs of rock that I give to our club for the wheel(s) of fortune at our show. Its coming up on March 9th and 10th in Turlock, CA Bob

Welcome from California. I don't tumble rocks, but buy them to give to little kids etc. Very popular. Many adults don't know a rock can be polished.

Thanks for all the warm welcomes. I know I will enjoy reading the posts and maybe trying my hands at tumbling.
This may be a question with no clear answer. How much noise do the tumblers make when they are in action. My wife is not real crazy about an operating tumbler being on the covered back porch. We have a shed with electricity and that may be the better choice.

Welcome to the board. I give most my stuff away and keep others for display. Tumblers rotary and vibe do make noise but a conversation can be held while they are running. I have an old Lortone with 2 12#s and 2 6#s that is just to loud so it's in the garage. I have a Scott Murray with 2 12#s and it is much quieter and goes on our back porch. I could make the Lortone quieter by by fixing it up a bit but haven't had a chance. I think 3 pound barrels are just white noise and run them all over the house and on the back porch. My suggestion would be to try it on your porch first and if your partners says it's too loud move it to the garage. If you start in the garage your partner is going to say keep it there Matt
