I've been virtually alone in my rock hounding experience thus far with about four exceptions in my entire lifetime where I met other people and talked about rocks. I've spent hours pouring over the pictures on these boards. I have found names for some of my special specimens. I don't have any books about rocks or anything. I've been picking up all kinds of beach agates and interesting rocks for the past three years. I've recently finished polishing most of my agates and I want to get more rocks tumbled too.
I believe that I'm ready to move on to cutting and shaping some of my stones now. I bought a few power tools and would like to add a few more as money allows.
I'm confused why people on here are buying rocks to polish. I've never thought about polishing rocks I didn't find myself. I view my rocks as beautiful jewels but they don't mean as much if I don't find them.
I am a photographer by profession so I hope to share some photos with you all in the near future. I'd love to meet a rock hounding buddy (male or female), who lives around my area, Anacortes, who would like to hang out.

Welcome aboard! Where is Anacortes, pardon my lack of knowledge Some rocks we buy because, where we live ,those types aren't available to find. You will probably be buying some rocks at some point as this addiction get a little more under the your skin. No will power to resist. lol

Welcome! I buy rocks because they are pretty, affordable, and I like them. I agree they mean more if I find them, but I don't tumble rocks. I cab and carve them, or set them. The most plentiful rock around here is serpentine, our (California) state rock. Most of it cannot be cabbed or carved or set.

I think my love for rocks is in my DNA. My mother was the same, and one brother is as addicted as I am. When I was little, his job was to keep the rocks out of my mouth and pockets. That did not work. They just ended up in his pockets, then in a pile in the laundry room.
I've joined this site to learn more.
My latest passion is chrysocolla. I find a lot of it where I live. It is raw and stunning. I have been putting a clear sealer on some for wire wraps, to bring out the beauty, and my brother has taken some to polish, as he has the machine to do it.
So if anyone wants to buy some raw stone, I have quite a bit here in AZ.
For as long as I can remember, I've loved rock. My 3 year old granddaughter has now gotten the bug too.

Hello and welcome! Your question about buying rocks made me smile. Where I live, we are not allowed to collect rocks by law. I buy most of my rocks or swap with folks here on the board because I like them and I love working with them. Buying gives me the variety I want for my store and to work with. Hope this helps! Cathy

Welcome to the forum. I second what people said about buying rocks. Sure it's more meaningful to find them yourself but some rocks just beg to be bought when you see them.

I love to see the varieties of stones from around the world. And consider each to be a challenge to see if a new type of stone will be a breeze to polish or make me work extra hard to make it be presentable and show its beauty. And I live in the Austin chalk zone. Nothing but white limestone chalk. I`ve found some cool fossils but very few rocks that aren`t chalk. And I`m addicted to rocks too.

Welcome to the Forum/Asylum... I live in Florida, no rocks just Sand..I have to buy as I cannot get out of state to collect very easily...besides I love trading too, and I can usually get some great deals here as well as advice on how to best work it.. one day I plan to travel and will collect as much of the pieces I like as I can so that I will have a nice rock pile to pick from !!
