OK, came back from vacation and went to check on the rocks and ...yech...smelly slurry was all over the floor!! Have a few questions: 1) What causes the tumbler to open? I thought I had put the top on tight...can over filling cause it? Before I re-load it, any suggestions so this doesn't happen again! 2) What is the stuff so smelly? 3) How do I clean up the slurry off the tile, should I let it dry first or wet it down? I guess your not a true tumbler until you really make a mess!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Whats causes them to open, depending on the type of stone, due to chemical reactions, gas pressure can build up inside the tumbler that can cause the tumbler to open up. Thats why they recomend checking on them every 24 hours.
There could be tiny gas bubbles trapped in the stone and when that bubble is breached. insta stinkbomb causing your smell or it could be the water simply sat long enough to stagnate (bactiria formed in the water) and that too could cause the smell.
Getting it up wet, is not an issue, use a sponge and a bucket to rinse it out, insure you dump the bucket outside.

What kind of tumbler was it?
What kind of rock were you tumbling?
Did you add anything to your medium besides water and grit?
How long was it tumbling before you got back from your trip?

If it had a bit of an odour, it probably was a jasper. Jasper has to be burped regularily. With clean up, just let it dry and it will wipe off like grout. You have earned the rite of passage, and you are now one of us for sure. Just wait untill you try something hairbrained like adding cornmeal. I had to re-do a room, sheetrock, retextured, repainted and the smell was amazing. That only took three days and I was here and burping every day. On the third day, it took off. It literally sprayed a line on the floor, walls, and ceiling. Whatever you do, no organics in a tumble. Jasper is bad enough.

Well I guess it does happen to the best of us. I never knew why people said they checked the tumblers...I never thought about exploding tumblers...missed that part of biology class!! I am using a Lortone two barrel tumbler. I had mixed rocks picked up at two different locations, one group was the the beach and the other was from a lake up in the mountains here in California. Could a rock mixture cause this to happen? I also put a Tums into the tumbler, I read that was helpful...for what I don't know. What ever it was...it caused a disaster...and a smelly one at that.

Two problems. First, the rock was from the ocean, which means it will most like produce gases. Second, when you add extra (unnecessary) additives like tums, you're basically starting up your own science project. Keep it simple. Grit and water. Nothing else.
