Hi Guys Anyone get zapped while buffing? I do a lot of buffing on bench grinder and get zapped all the time. Enough to make you flinch and drop a rock heart :nono: Its irritating!!! For the longest time I thought I had an electrical problem But it just static & dry weather I was wondering if any buffers (and I'm not just talking rock) but metal buffing ect have ever experience this problem ? And would any one have a solution? please Thanks Ed

Here you go ... In computer repair they make a wrist strap that you would clip to any metal surface and it would draw off static elect so as not to harm electronics... I used to have a couple of them, but not anymore. They have plenty of them on Amazon.com
Also, I would recommend that you make sure your buffer and the outlet it is plugged into is well grounded too !!

Thanks Mario! That idea had crossed my mind. I have a wrist strap I bought 20 years ago. I used it all the time when I had my hand in the computer. But I got away from that practice. Pretty inexpensive and perhaps a fast efficient solution Thanks Chuck! I hadn’t seen one of those mats. I have heard of a buffing wax computer rooms use to damper the static. I really have been learning lots about electricity because of this reoccurring problem. I knew I wasn’t getting electrocuted. But it is unnerving to get zapped It made me really wonder if I had an electrical grounding problem? Then a person who I was explaining the problem to, off the cuff asked: if it wasn’t static electricity ? Well that got me thinking. It only occurs when I’m buffing…mostly. So I Googled it. Static electricity + buffing. Well I’ll be darn. There was a bit of discussion about that very problem and possible solutions. One guy ran a wire from the buffer to a grounded copper stake. That may be another solution Amazing that buffing creates this physical phenomena. It gives insight into what were trying to accomplish. Rearrange the surface atoms on a piece of material to achieve flashing wave like properties. buff on Ed

I knew those hearts you make looked "electrifying" but now I know why ;D

Make sure you say "clear" before shocking. I have gooten shoked twice - once leaning against a metal arm rail on a bed when defibrillating someone. The other time i was examing someone when their pacer/ defibrillator went off. Weird feeliing. Felt funny for a frw minutes afterward. Shocks can restart a nonbeating heart. Maybe it helps bring your creations to life. The motley cru song Kickstart my Heart always comes into my head when I shock someone Bill

You got the clear heart, Bill I find that amazing and perhaps ironic. The doc gets the patient heart started with a shock and about stops his with a shock :nono: Take Care & CLEAR ! I haven't employed any anti- static method yet but was getting zapped this morning

When I was making knives I used a buffer alot. I was getting electrocuted constantly. It was realy bad. Straps worried me, they can get wrapped up in the wheel. Maybe a grounded metal pad to rest your fore arms on while buffing.

Hi Ed, I get the same problem when I use my dry buffer when the humidity level is low, like it always is in Az. (It's a Dry Heat. :-) ) I usually don't mind a 10+ KV shock as long as I know its coming, I thought about using a wrist strap but I was concerned with it catching in the wheel. So, after reading this post I decided to try the ESD heel straps that we have to ware at work when we are on the Test Floor, NO MORE SHOCKS. Ideally you would need a conductive grounded floor, but my expoxy paint in the garage worked just fine. Tim

Howdy Tim Do you know if ESD stand for electro static discharge? something similar I would imagine. I never seen the heels just looked them up inexpensive! I was wondering does it have a strap/wire that needs to be connected to grounded surface? I’m just using a light weight buffer My heavy duty polishing arbor is stored But that’s a good safety point about the wrist strap Hi Joe. Knife making is something I always wanted to do. I do lots of re-sharpening and buffing of knives That’s where most my zap have occurred When it started with the buffing of rocks I was really surprised Thanks Roy! In my quest to go liquid shine a few zaps are a small inconvenience and do give the hearts little extra rock’n shock’n And thanks guys for verifying that this phenomenon is just not in my head or some other strange anomaly Its turned into a valuable & informative thread If another person does a Google search because they are experience the same problem this thread is liable to get a hit. They will receive great solution advice That’s how RTH rocks! Ed

Hi Guys!! I'm happy to report that a wrist band is solving the problem I bought a throw away type for 1.29 at Fry's Electronic They have wireless straps now for 15 bucks So I'll probably invest in one of them After I get years of buffing out of my throwaway one Times are Tough Rocks are Hard
